Job summary

Resorts of the Canadian Rockies in Alberta seeks an Assistant Avalanche Technician / Ski Patroller to support the Avalanche Safety Program and ensure safe daily ski area operations. The role combines avalanche forecasting, snowpack monitoring, hazard assessment, and control operations with guest assistance, emergency response, and mountain safety duties.

The ideal candidate is safety-driven, works well in a team, and can make sound decisions in challenging mountain conditions.

Qualifications

  • AST Level 2 required and current.
  • CAA Avalanche Operations Level 1 (or actively pursuing) required.
  • Blaster's Permit required or eligibility to obtain.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence required.
  • Wilderness First Aid (80-hour minimum) or equivalent required.
  • Strong skiing or snowboarding ability in advanced alpine terrain.
  • Experience travelling safely in avalanche terrain.
  • Ability to work in severe winter weather and physically demanding environments.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work early mornings, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts during storm cycles.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily avalanche hazard forecasting and snowpack assessments.
  • Conduct weather observations, snow profiles, stability tests, and field assessments.
  • Collect, record, and maintain accurate snowpack, weather, and avalanche data.
  • Participate in avalanche control operations under supervision.
  • Assist with explosives handling in compliance with laws and procedures.
  • Monitor avalanche terrain and communicate conditions to the team.
  • Inspect and maintain avalanche safety equipment and routes.
  • Participate in daily operational meetings with field observations.
  • Assist with avalanche incident response and rescue operations as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of forecasting techniques and safety standards.
  • Patrol assigned terrain to maintain guest/staff safety.
  • Respond to accidents and medical emergencies with first aid.
  • Perform lift evacuations and mountain search and rescue when required.
  • Identify and mitigate hazards throughout the ski area.
  • Assist with terrain opening/closing procedures.
  • Install and maintain safety signage and infrastructure.
  • Communicate mountain conditions with other departments.
  • Provide professional guest service and promote safe skiing.
