Job summary

Resorts of the Canadian Rockies is seeking an Assistant Avalanche Technician / Ski Patroller in Alberta. You will support avalanche forecasting, snowpack monitoring, and control operations, while also serving as a Ski Patroller providing guest assistance and emergency response.

This dual-role demands strong teamwork, good decision-making in harsh mountain conditions, and flexibility with storm cycles. Requirements include AST Level 2, CAA Avalanche Ops Level 1 (or in progress), Alberta Blaster

Qualifications

  • AST Level 2 certification required or in progress.
  • CAA Avalanche Operations Level 1 or be actively working toward it.
  • Valid Alberta Blaster's Permit or eligible to obtain.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence.
  • Wilderness First Aid (80 hours minimum) or equivalent.
  • Strong skiing or snowboarding ability in alpine terrain.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work early mornings, weekends, and extended shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily avalanche hazard forecasting and snowpack assessments.
  • Conduct weather observations, snow profiles, stability tests, and field assessments.
  • Collect, record, and maintain snowpack, weather, and avalanche data.
  • Participate in avalanche control operations under supervision.
  • Assist with explosive handling and inventory in compliance with laws and procedures.
  • Inspect and maintain avalanche safety equipment and control routes.
  • Patrol terrain, respond to accidents, and provide first aid when needed.
  • Communicate evolving conditions to the avalanche team and mountain operations.
  • Engage in patrol training, emergency response exercises, and ongoing education.

Education

AST Level 2
CAA Avalanche Operations Level 1
Alberta Blaster's Permit
Class 5 driver's licence
Wilderness First Aid (80 hours)
Strong skiing or snowboarding ability
Excellent communication and teamwork
Ability to work early mornings, weekends, holidays
