Job Description
The Automation Technician position is responsible for serving as a plant resource for line improvements, line automation, realignment of product flow equipment and machinery in conjunction with Engineering and Maintenance.
Performance Expectations
- Set up personnel and maintenance departments to reduce costs and remove non-value added material from production lines.
- Work with program managers and project engineers at the APQP stage of a program start-up.
- Plan assigned work efficiently to minimize machine downtime while ensuring employee safety.
- Troubleshoot process automation problems.
- Perform regular housekeeping duties.
- Work within QS9000 procedures and requirements.
- Collaborate with engineering following PPAP approval to resolve non-value added processes.
- Participate in process design during start-up and current production projects.
- Assign work tasks where applicable to co-workers.
- Ensure work is performed to minimize downtime.
- Verify all new and rebuilt equipment complies with CSA, OSHA, and Electrical Safety Code.
- Perform root cause analysis of failures.
- Back up PLC and programs periodically.
- Maintain an updated and controlled PLC program database.
- Keep equipment documentation updated.
- Schedule production activities across design, maintenance, and inspection phases to meet deadlines.
- Participate in meetings with supervisors, co-workers, and employees to plan and update projects.
Credentials
- Completion of a three-year program in electrical or mechanical technology.
- Trade license in Industrial Electrical Maintenance (442A).
- Electronics Technician/Technologist Certificate, Electrician Qualification, or equivalent.
- Certificate of Qualification or related field certification or equivalent experience.
- Completion of manufacturer-specific courses.
- Minimum five years experience in CNC and robotic repair/programming.
- Understanding of electrical/electronic schematics, blueprints, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of advanced PLC programming (Allen Bradley, ControlLogix/RS Logix, Siemens S7, Fanuc) and robot systems (ABB, Motoman).
- Basic knowledge of computer networking, Ethernet, TCP/IP.
- Experience with statistical analysis software and CAD/CAM tools.
- Ability to verify product compliance with quality standards.
- Ability to assess mechanical equipment condition and recommend repairs or replacements.
