Job summary

General Motors in Markham, Ontario, is seeking an Automation Engineer to design, develop, and implement advanced controls for automotive body shop operations. You will ensure reliability, performance, and adherence to engineering standards across robotics, vision, and conveyance technologies.

You will document system requirements, configure PLCs/HMIs, integrate industrial networks, and lead continuous improvement to reduce downtime while supporting high-volume production.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 2 years’ experience as Automation/Controls Engineer or related occupation.
• 2 years designing, programming, and troubleshooting PLCs and HMIs.
• 1 year programming FANUC robots and 3D vision bin picking.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement advanced controls for body shop automation.
• Document system requirements and control strategies for automated systems.
• Program and troubleshoot Allen Bradley PLCs and Siemens TIA Portal HMIs.
• Configure industrial networks for real-time communication across PLCs, robots, vision systems, and peripherals.
• Integrate, program, and optimize FANUC industrial robots for material handling and welding/vision tasks.
• Develop and troubleshoot machine vision systems for inspection and bin picking.
• Maintain vision-guided bin picking using 3D vision technologies.
• Support and optimize conveyance systems to ensure continuous production flow.
• Create electrical schematics using EPLAN to support design and troubleshooting.
• Lead root-cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
