We are hiring an Associate Support Engineer to build a career with Canonical and support customers leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer eager to learn, passionate about Linux and open source technologies, and interested in working with industry experts at Canonical.

We solve complex technical problems regularly, including cloud environment triaging, desktop and server issues, Linux kernel crashes, OS configuration issues, and root cause analysis. You will be responsible for delivering outstanding technical support across the full stack at Canonical, covering cloud, desktop, and IoT. You will manage your cases from qualification to resolution, collaborating with colleagues or senior engineers as needed. This is a remote role.

Location: This is a globally remote position.

Role responsibilities include:

  1. Providing technical support from your home office for employees.
  2. Owning and managing support cases via phone, email, and web.
  3. Communicating effectively with internal customers, keeping them updated.
  4. Handling support cases according to SLA and ensuring high customer satisfaction.
  5. Contributing to and maintaining knowledge base articles.
  6. Drafting technical notices for communication.
  7. Prioritizing tasks to address urgent issues.
  8. Continuously learning about our products and services.
  9. Understanding Ubuntu development to set realistic customer expectations.
  10. Maintaining regular communication with the team, locally and remotely.
  11. Suggesting improvements to service quality.
  12. Participating in weekend rotation support.

Candidate requirements:

  • Strong academic record from high school and university.
  • Degree in a technical field such as Computer Science, MIS, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Confidence in communication, feedback exchange, and idea sharing.
  • Proven ability to exceed expectations and achieve results.
  • Experience with Linux troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge or experience in at least two of the following:
    • Linux server administration
    • Programming fundamentals (bash, Perl, Ruby, JavaScript, C/C++, Go)
    • Networking (bonding, firewalling, bridging, etc.)
    • Virtualization/Cloud computing (provisioning, monitoring, orchestration)
  • Quick learner, adaptable, and able to handle customer-facing pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal English skills.
  • Appreciative of diversity, polite, and effective in multicultural environments.
  • Result-driven with a personal commitment to meet goals.
  • Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with virtualized environments (KVM, VirtualBox, VMWare).
  • Experience with open-source desktop technologies.
  • Active contribution to open-source projects or forums.
