The Assistant Controller plays a critical role in supporting the financial operations of Kelowna’s Gospel Mission (KGM). This position is primarily responsible for managing and processing payroll and daily financial transactions while assisting the Director of Finance in budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and reporting. The Assistant Controller also contributes to the development and continuous improvement of financial systems and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process full-cycle payroll, including submitting Records of Employment (ROEs), updating system changes, and ensuring timely and accurate completion in compliance with employment standards and CRA regulations;
  • Support month-end and year-end processes, including preparing account reconciliations, accruals, adjusting entries, and supporting schedules within established timelines;
  • Maintain the confidentiality and security of employee, payroll, and financial information in accordance with legal, ethical, and organizational requirements;
  • Coordinate benefits administration and respond to benefit-related inquiries;
  • Reconcile clearing accounts, including payroll-related accounts, and resolve outstanding items;
  • Complete bank and credit card reconciliations, monitor cash balances, and identify unusual or outstanding transactions for follow-up;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of financial SOP’s, financial policies, systems, and procedures to streamline operations with lean management techniques;
  • Assist in planning and organizing the annual audit process and financial reviews;
  • Participate in and assist the Director of Finance with budgeting, and forecasting activities;
  • Continuously evaluate financial systems and make recommendations to the Director of Finance for improvements;
  • Cultivate and sustain positive, trusting relationships with leadership through accessibility, approachability, and prompt responsiveness to their concerns and inquiries;
  • Handle the day-to-day financial responsibilities to ensure smooth financial operations;
  • This position is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (Vulnerable Sector).
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA or CMA certification preferred;
  • Certification with the National Payroll Institute as a Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) or Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) is preferred;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management, preferably in the nonprofit sector;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records;
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products and accounting systems;
  • Exhibits cultural sensitivity and competence, and demonstrates ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines, while performing tasks efficiently both independently and as a part of a dynamic culturally diverse team;
  • This position is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (Vulnerable Sector).
