Job summary

Arts Umbrella on Granville Island is seeking a part-time, hourly Instructional Faculty member in Architecture from September 17, 2026 to December 13, 2026. The role focuses on designing and delivering architecture education for youth and coordinating with program staff.

The ideal candidate has education in Architecture/Design and experience working with children in educational or arts settings, with strong communication skills for families.

Qualifications

  • Shows understanding of Arts Umbrella’s mission and standards for instruction.
  • Experience or equivalence in architectural/design education preferred.
  • Experience with children and youth in educational or arts settings; 1+ year preferred.
  • Experience developing and delivering lesson plans or educational programming preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare sessional program overviews aligned with curriculum documents and foster student engagement in Architecture programs.
  • Design and deliver engaging programming introducing fundamentals of architectural and urban design, including sketching and models; encourage experimentation and creativity.
  • Work closely with Assistants to ensure student safety and active participation in Arts Umbrella programs.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment by supporting assistants and community partners in bringing Arts Umbrella’s creative and educational vision to life.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Arts Umbrella by maintaining clear communication with families at the start and end of each class.

In this role you will
  • Collaborate with the Artistic Director of Art & Design to prepare sessional program overviews, ensuring alignment with curriculum documents and fostering positive student engagement in the classroom, with a particular focus on Architecture Programs.
  • Design and deliver engaging programming that introduces students to the fundamentals of architectural and urban design, including sketching and model making, while encouraging experimentation, play, and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Work closely with Assistants to ensure student safety and active participation throughout Arts Umbrella programs.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment by supporting assistants and community partners in bringing Arts Umbrella’s creative and educational vision to life.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Arts Umbrella by maintaining clear communication with families at the start and end of each class.
Here Is What You Bring
  • Education in Architecture, Design, Urban Planning or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience in Architectural design, or related disciplines will also be considered.
  • Strong understanding of Arts Umbrella’s vision and mission and can demonstrate the Standards for Instruction in their current practice.
  • Previous experience working with children and youth in educational, community, or arts-based settings; a minimum of one (1) year of experience is preferred.
  • Experience developing and delivering lesson plans or educational programming is preferred.
