The District of Saanich's Parks, Recreation and Community Services department is seeking a team player to help drive our mission of Healthy Nature, Healthy People, and Healthy Community, while supporting our vision: a Saanich where everyone belongs.

You’ll work within a team where service excellence, learning and sharing, and feedback and accountability are highly valued, and where communication, trust, respect, and positivity form the foundation for everything we do.

Gordon Head Recreation Centre is seeking an enthusiastic and qualified Aquatic Instructor II / Lifeguard to join the aquatics team. This permanent part-time position combines entry-level aquatic instruction with lifeguarding responsibilities and supports safe, welcoming and engaging aquatic programs and public swims.

Under the general direction of a Program Technician or Programmer, the Aquatic Instructor II / Lifeguard instructs Lifesaving Society Swim for Life and Canadian Swim Patrol lesson programs, plans and prepares assigned lessons, completes progress cards and other basic reports, and assists with the orientation and safety supervision of volunteers and swim instructor candidates. Lifeguarding responsibilities include supervising pool users, enforcing health regulations and facility rules, preventing and responding to accidents and injuries, supporting emergency procedures, completing records and logs, inspecting equipment for safe use, and assisting with the orientation and training of Assistant Lifeguards and Aquatic Fun Leaders.

Requirements include Grade 10 and a minimum of 16 years of age; current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor award; current National Lifeguard Pool Option; current Standard First Aid with CPR-C; current WorkSafeBC Basic First Aid or equivalent/higher as required; and three months of previous work experience. Previous teaching and/or lifeguarding experience is an asset. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Employment is subject to provision of a satisfactory Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector (PIC-VS), with renewal required per policy.

The successful candidate will be required to work varying shifts including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Shifts will include both lessons and lifeguarding. Hours and shifts are assigned seasonally by a supervisor and are subject to change based on operational need. The successful candidate will be required to work a minimum of 14 hours per week, with a targeted base of 25 hours per week where feasible. As a component of the selection process, testing will be conducted. Although we thank all applicants for applying, only those under consideration will be contacted.
