Job summary

The Corporation of the City of Cranbrook is seeking a Lifeguard Instructor II to lead leadership and specialized programs in the Aquatics section. You will ensure that all aquatic programs meet standards and supervise patrons during activities.

Responsibilities include lifeguarding, supervising change areas, and performing light maintenance. Applicants should have relevant certifications and a Grade 12 diploma, with public safety and water-safety instruction experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 Diploma or GED required.
• National Lifeguard Award – Pool and Standard First Aid with CPR C.
• Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) certification required.
• Aquafit Instructor certification advantageous.
• AED certification helpful.

Job description

Under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor, the Lifeguard Instructor II provides instruction in leadership and specialized programs, ensuring that the delivery of all Aquatic programs meet the standards as required by the Aquatic Centre, and Lifesaving Society.
The incumbent ensures patron safety through supervision and instructional duties; provides supervision of swimming, change areas and other related recreational areas; performs a variety of janitorial and minor maintenance tasks. The incumbent possesses a working knowledge of pool chemistry, water filtration, chlorination, heating and related pool equipment and operating procedures.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

• Grade 12 Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE

• Sound knowledge and/or experience in lifeguarding/instruction duties and teaching methods/group leadership techniques with emphasis on water safety instruction and aquatic skills
• Knowledge and/or experience in performing pool operation and maintenance

SPECIFIC SKILLS

• Sound knowledge of theory and practice, lifeguarding, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid
• Working knowledge of Pool Chemistry
• Ability to prepare facility related records and reports
• Ability to work with minimal supervision

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Initiative, sound judgement, positive and responsive when dealing with the public, user groups and staff
