Job summary

The City of Thompson is seeking an Animal Control Officer to administer and enforce the City’s Animal Control By-Law, and to respond to public inquiries and complaints in a timely, professional manner.

You will patrol communities, investigate infringements, maintain records, renew dog licenses, and prepare reports for supervision. A high school diploma is expected; experience in related fields and a valid Manitoba Class 5 license are preferred.

Qualifications

• High school graduate; college degree preferred.
• Experience or training in a related field preferred (by-law enforcement, Vet assistant, Animal Health Tech, etc.).
• Experience with computers is required; MS Office proficiency.
• Must hold and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba driver's license.
• Ability to meet tight schedules; handle animals.
• Knowledge of common breeds of dogs and cats.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and public relations skills.
• Knowledge of City of Thompson rules, regulations and by-laws.
• Ability to work under stressful public conditions and handle complex situations.

Responsibilities

• Respond to public enquiries and complaints regarding by-law issues in a timely, expedient and professional manner.
• Administers, enforces and monitors all aspects of the City of Thompson Animal Control By-Law.
• Reviews outstanding parking tickets and issues appropriate documents for collection of fines.
• Prepares reports as requested by Supervisor and advises of significant issues or incidents.
• Patrol the community regularly, monitor infractions, serve notices, and take action to ensure infractions are remedied.
• Receives complaints and requests and takes appropriate action when required.
• Conducts investigations and collects evidence related to By-law infractions and issues warnings or offense notices as required.
• Maintains vehicle and equipment in good operating condition and reports maintenance needs.
• Notifies owners of impounded animals and arranges release; renewals of dog licences.
• Prepares all reports and statistics related to daily work.
