The main purpose of a Weekend Animal Care Technician is to provide complete animal care including clean housing, adequate food and water, appropriate environmental enrichment; maintains adequate health records and monitors health of animals and adequate environmental parameters in the assigned work area. The technician is to follow the room schedule and meet the facility requirements (SOPs) and standards.
Here's What You Will Get To Do
- Daily monitoring of animals for health issues. Detected health issues and must be able to determine if the animal requires immediate attention. Maintain records, report to the veterinarian and follow advised treatment plan for sick animals or euthanasia. Updates the veterinarian on the status with urgent health issues before leaving the area for the day.
- Provide feed and water and some cage changing
- Must be available to communicate with research staff, supervisor and the veterinarian via e-mail and or telephone and respond within working day.
- Provision of technical assistance with experimental treatment administration (injecting, gavaging, topical, and blood collection) and activities related to colony management.
- Monitoring of research staff compliance with the Lab Animal Services (LAS) policies on infection prevention and control and reporting any breaches to the Animal Husbandry Supervisor.
- The Animal Care Technician is often assigned to one area of the facility but must gain a full knowledge of each species requirements and each procedure required of them (as per the SOP of that area)
- General housekeeping in assigned area. Floors, glass, counter tops, removal of garbage, and dirty laundry and procedure rooms in your assigned area.
- Technicians should be able to operate some of the physical plant equipment in an emergency situation and should be familiar with the flow of that area of the facility.
- Other work responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor, including cage wash and surgical areas
Here's What You Will Need
- Graduate of a 1year Animal Health program or equivalent experience
- Veterinary Technician Diploma is an asset
- RVT, CALAS certificate preferred, RLAT or ALAT
- Research Facilities experience is an asset
- Basic comprehension of the up-to-date Canadian Council Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines is an asset
- Detailed record keeping
- As this is a physical demanding position, should be able to lift a minimum of 15kg (feed bags).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Motivated team player willing to take on challenge and build on their own skills
- Proficient at performing Subcutaneous (SQ), Intraperitoneal(IP), Intramuscular (IM), topical treatments and oral gavaging
- Proficient at performing all 2 methods of euthanasia (CO2, cervical dislocation)
Employment Type: Part-time, 11hrs/week
