Position Overview

The Operations Leader - Animal Care promotes and ensures the efficient and effective operations of the Companion Animal Department and drives the sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds, and small companion animals. The Operations Leader - Animal Care will coach and mentor all Pet Care Center partners in the processes to support and drive the guest experience and animal care. They are responsible for training, developing, supporting operations scheduling, and leading a high-performing team that delivers the department's sales goals, gross margin, and animal and merchandise shrink targets. They will also assist in managing all aspects of the Pet Care Center's business in accordance with Petco standards and safety procedures.

Position Responsibilities

  1. Utilize business acumen to measure, analyze, and diagnose business trends and implement improvement plans.
  2. Ensure the health and well-being of live animals by providing correct care according to Petco standards, policies, and procedures, including hourly health checks and wellness cards.
  3. Adhere to Veterinary Protocol for all sick animals.
  4. Process transactions to create a great guest experience.
  5. Support guest interactions with product knowledge and selling strategies.
  6. Implement and execute Companion Animal Operations and Aquatics through training and coaching in areas like Animal Care, Aquatics, and Regulatory Compliance.
  7. Order live animals efficiently to maximize sales, margin, and inventory; analyze department data for improvements.
  8. Maintain operational standards in the department.
  9. Complete all animal-related maintenance tasks as per the Maintenance Task List.
  10. Maintain high presentation standards in aquatics and companion animal areas.
  11. Partner with Merchandising to ensure proper stock levels and achieve goals.
  12. Handle and document all Adoption Animals properly.
  13. Analyze PCC sales and margin reports.
  14. Lead, coach, and provide feedback to PCC partners for quality service and task performance.
  15. Ensure proper partner scheduling to meet in-stock and guest service goals during peak hours.
  16. Apply talent management skills in recruiting, hiring, training, and succession planning.
  17. Provide quick, courteous service by understanding guest needs and sharing product knowledge.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Support the implementation of Omni Channel initiatives like BOPUS, Ship-from-store, Curbside, and Endless Aisle.
  • Support Pet Care Center operations, training, communication, and company initiatives as Leader on Duty.
  • Train and develop partners in partnership with the sales team.
  • Promote a positive leadership culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.
  • Display and champion Petco Leadership Expectations.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.
  • 1+ years management experience required; 2+ preferred.
  • Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Proficiency in communication, organizational, and computer skills including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Strong guest service, analysis, problem-solving, and people development skills.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise Operations Specialists & Senior Aquatics Specialists.
  • Support opening/closing and attendance processes.
  • Ensure safety procedures are followed for partners, guests, and pets.
Work Environment

This role requires support during key hours, including weekends. Most duties are indoors, with some outdoor activities like stocking and customer assistance. Physical activity includes bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, and standing for long periods. Some travel may be required.
