Job summary

Umicore in Markham, Ontario is seeking a metallurgical engineer with 5+ years of experience to provide technical support, conduct sample prep and testing, and analyze data for reporting. You will contribute to continuous improvement, work on alloy introduction projects, and ensure compliance with EH&S and confidentiality guidelines.

The role requires strong English communication, shop-floor experience, and occasional travel to the United States. A degree in metallurgy or equivalent is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in metallurgy and materials science engineering preferred; Canadian 4-year equivalent acceptable.
  • 5+ years experience as a technical resource in a mid-sized industrial facility.
  • ISO/OHSA and WHMIS courses are assets.
  • Attention to detail and strong English communication are key.
  • Hands-on shop-floor production/processing environment experience.
  • Replacement position; ability to work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technically correct answers to product performance and service questions.
  • Support continuous improvement through investigations, trials, and audits.
  • Participate in new alloy introduction, service/product launches, and commissioning.
  • Sample preparation, testing, data analysis, and reporting with clear documentation.
  • Follow EH&S, IMS, and confidentiality guidelines; occasional travel to the United States.

Your Key Accountabilities
  • Sales, Customer Service, Customer support: provide technically correct answers to questions concerning product performance and requirements. Answer questions re the scope of and issues with services provided by the company.
  • Continuous improvement: provides technical / metallurgical support to all other departments by actively participating in and/or leading: customer complaint investigations; process improvement trials; EH&S committee follow up items; resolution of ISO audit actions (corrective / preventive action); product improvement trials; service improvement trials; document updates, as assigned.
  • Participates in projects re new alloy introduction; new service or product introduction; and equipment commissioning as assigned.
  • Position is responsible for: sample preparation, testing (metallography, mechanical properties, metrology, etc.) and data analysis; technically correct and objective interpretation of resultant data / findings regardless of their source; presentation of both verbal and written reports; maintaining readily retrievable documents and records; issuing Certificates of Compliance / Analysis; honest, diplomatic and clear communication with all Umicore colleagues, customers, suppliers and service providers.
  • Position must follow all EH&S, IMS and Security rules, as well as company confidentiality guidelines at all times, both when on and away from the work site.
  • Position requires occasional travel to the United States.
  • To uphold, respect and ensure compliance with health and safety standards as outlined in the company’s guidelines, both personally and within the team.
  • Act as a role model by fostering a culture of care and responsibility within the team. Encourage and support team members to actively participate in preventive measures and continuous improvement initiatives related to health and safety activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Who we are looking for
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy and Materials Science Engineering preferred (equivalent of 4 year program at a Canadian university) with knowledge of both chemical and physical metallurgy. Three or four year College Diploma (eligible for CET) in Metallurgical Engineering Technology with direct shop experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a technical resource in a mid‑sized industrial, preferably nonferrous metal, processing facility.
  • Successful completion of ISO/OHSA courses, WHMIS courses, project management courses is an asset.
  • Attention to detail and good communication (primarily English) skills are key requirements of this position.
  • Good computer, analytical, and sample prep skills. This is a hands‑on, results‑oriented position, so comfort on a shop floor production / processing environment is key.
  • Effective both when working on their own and when part of a team.
  • Soft skills include diplomacy when discussing concerns with both internal and external customers and suppliers, and when presenting results / data / findings from assignments, as well as the ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision once an assignment is fully understood.
  • Good understanding of WHMIS, SDSs, etc.
  • This position is a replacement position.
  • Artificial intelligence is not used to screen candidates.
  • Salary range for this position $70,000-90,000.
