Job summary

Umicore is seeking an experienced EHS leader for the Burlington site to drive Environmental, Health and Safety programs, maintain ISO systems, and lead audits and compliance. Responsibilities

  • Lead EHS programs for the Burlington site and own the EHS management system.

  • Lead incident investigations with root-cause analysis and preventive actions.
  • Develop emergency plans, drills, and liaison with regulators and external partners.
  • Support site projects with EHS guidance and budget management.
  • Lead JHSC and other EHS committees; track actions to completion.

Your Key Accountabilities

EHS Leadership & Strategy: Lead Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) programs for the Burlington site and serve as the site owner of the EHS Management System. Drive a risk-based approach to EHS by establishing objectives, monitoring key performance indicators, and ensuring corrective actions achieve sustainable results.

Management Systems & Compliance: Maintain and continuously improve ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, permit conditions, and internal Umicore standards. Lead audits, management reviews, inspections, and compliance assurance activities, driving corrective actions to closure.

Safety Culture & Capability Development: Foster a proactive safety culture through visible leadership, coaching, and employee engagement. Partner with site leaders to integrate EHS principles into daily operations while developing EHS capabilities across the organization.

Team Leadership & Collaboration: Lead, coach, and prioritize activities for the EHS Specialist and cross-functional EHS stakeholders. Work collaboratively with site leadership, employees, and corporate teams to achieve EHS objectives and strengthen organizational performance.

Industrial Hygiene & Risk Management: Oversee industrial hygiene monitoring programs and translate findings into prioritized risk mitigation plans. Lead hazard identification, risk assessments, and preventive initiatives to reduce workplace risks.

Training & Competency Development: Own EHS training and competency programs, including WHMIS/SDS requirements, contractor management, and training matrices. Ensure employees and contractors have the knowledge and resources needed to work safely.

Program Governance: Manage core EHS programs, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, powered industrial trucks (PIT), chemical management, and other critical risk controls. Verify program effectiveness through audits, inspections, and performance reviews.

Incident Management: Lead incident investigations using root cause analysis methodologies. Ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented effectively to prevent recurrence and promote continuous improvement.

Emergency Preparedness & Response: Develop and maintain emergency response plans, conduct drills, evaluate lessons learned, and coordinate activities with external emergency response organizations and agencies.

Stakeholder & Regulatory Relations: Serve as the primary site contact for regulatory agencies, compliance officers, community stakeholders, and external partners. Ensure inspection readiness and maintain constructive relationships with key stakeholders.

Project & Operational Support: Provide EHS guidance and support for site projects, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and internal requirements. Manage EHS budgets, timelines, and continuous improvement initiatives to support operational excellence.

Committee Leadership: Lead EHS committees, including the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), ensuring actions are tracked, completed, and verified for effectiveness.

Who we are looking for
Education
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Metallurgy, Environmental Sciences, Occupational Health & Safety, or another related technical discipline.
  • Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation preferred.
  • ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 Internal Auditor training preferred.
  • Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) certification preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an Environmental, Health & Safety role within a chemical, manufacturing, industrial, or similar environment.
  • Demonstrated experience administering EHS management systems and conducting internal audits, including ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario occupational health and safety legislation, Ministry of Labour requirements, environmental regulations, and compliance programs.
  • Experience leading incident investigations, corrective action management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Proven experience implementing industrial safety and risk management programs.
Technical Skills
  • Strong understanding of chemical or metallurgical processes and associated risks.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining industrial safety programs.
  • Knowledge of risk-based process safety methodologies.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications; Power BI experience is an asset.
  • Ability to interpret regulations, standards, and technical requirements and apply them effectively in the workplace.
