Job summary

School District No. 27 seeks a full-time temporary Alternate Teacher to begin September 1, 2026. This role emphasizes support for vulnerable youth through specialized instruction and behavioral support.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with a School Based Team to develop individual Student Learning Plans, while acknowledging and respecting local First Nations' contributions to education. Professional development and mentorship opportunities are provided for new teachers.

Salary

The salary of this assignment is based on our current salary grid and upon verification of your BC TQS as well as verification of years of service from previous employers. The current salary range is $63,347.00 to $116,190.00 per annum, paid over 10 months.

Description Of Assignment

This is a full time, temporary position effective September 1st, 2026 until the return of the incumbent. This position will not extend beyond June 30th, 2027. The FTE of this assignment may decrease to accommodate the incumbent.

Skyline Alternate School focuses on the educational, social and emotional issues for students whose needs are not being met in a traditional school program. Skyline provides support to students through differentiated instruction, specialized program delivery and enhanced counselling services based on students’ needs. There is seamless collaboration with agencies and community partners to provide additional services as required by the student population. Mental health literacy, personal awareness and responsibility, social responsibility, and active living are explicitly addressed in programming. The alternate teacher is directly involved in behavioural support with students who require it. Outdoor, place‑based, and service learning are key pedagogies. The Alternate Teacher will work collaboratively as part of an effective School Based Team to develop and implement individual Student Learning Plans to build student capacity to transition successfully to a traditional school environment, continuing education program, or from graduation to work or post‑secondary training and education.

Special Qualifications Required
  • A Diploma or Degree in Special Education
  • Training and experience with Learning Support
  • Training and experience teaching at the secondary level
  • Experience writing and maintaining IEP's
  • Training and experience in literacy and numeracy instruction
  • Demonstrated success working with vulnerable youth and youth requiring intensive social, emotional, and behavioural support
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and embedding First Peoples Principles of Learning
  • Training and experience in self‑regulation and trauma‑informed practice would be an asset

We also believe in providing Professional Development beyond the provisions of our collective agreement. The District has engaged in long‑term contracts with several (up to 6) educational leaders. Teachers can expect to see the educational leaders in our District, up to 2 days prior to a Professional Development Day, offering hands‑on coaching both in the classroom and in sessions (evening or during the Professional Development Day).

Our local teachers' union, the Cariboo Chilcotin Teachers' Association, also boasts strong collective agreement language regarding Professional Development as well as financial support for their members to engage in opportunities.
