Job summary

AltaGas is seeking a Transportation Student in Calgary for a 4-month term starting May 2027. You will gain hands-on experience in both Rail Transportation and Transportation Software Development, supporting operations and tech initiatives.

You’ll work with experienced teams on meaningful projects, including shipment tracking, data management, and workflow improvements, gaining exposure to Azure, C#, and Blazor in a real energy-industry setting.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in 2nd or 3rd year of an undergrad degree in CS/SE/CE/SCM/Logistics/Business or related field.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a team.
• Experience with MS Office; exposure to programming, databases, or data analysis is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist with shipment tracking, document and BOL management.
• Support database maintenance, reporting, and data quality initiatives.
• Help organize and standardize transportation documentation and processes.
• Provide logistics support for rail transportation activities.
• Assist with railroad pattern updates and waybill management.
• Assist with development, testing and maintenance of internal apps and tools.
• Support data management, reporting, and database initiatives.
• Troubleshoot issues and identify process improvements.
• Collaborate to translate business requirements into practical tech solutions.

At AltaGas, our Transportation teams play a critical role in safely, efficiently, and reliably moving products across our business. As a Transportation Student, you'll gain hands-on experience supporting transportation operations and the technology solutions that enable them.

Depending on your skills, interests, and business needs, you may be placed within Rail Transportation or Transportation Software Development, where you'll work alongside experienced professionals on meaningful projects that support day-to-day operations and long-term business objectives.

Rail Transportation

• Assisting with shipment tracking through document and Bill of Lading (BOL) management.
• Supporting database maintenance, reporting, and data quality initiatives.
• Helping organize and standardize transportation documentation and processes.
• Providing logistics support for rail transportation activities.
• Assisting with railroad pattern updates and waybill management.
• Collaborating with logistics, commercial, and operations teams to support product movements.

Transportation Software Development

• Assisting with the development, testing, and maintenance of internal business applications and software tools.
• Supporting data management, reporting, and database-related initiatives.
• Helping troubleshoot technical issues and identify opportunities for process improvements.
• Collaborating with team members to understand business requirements and develop practical technology solutions.
• Contributing to projects that improve operational efficiency, data visibility, and business decision-making.
• Participating in team planning cycles and project sprints to support the delivery of technology solutions.
• Gaining exposure to software development, cloud technologies, databases, and modern development practices.
• Working with technologies such as C#, ASP.NET Blazor, Entity Framework, HTML/CSS, and Microsoft Azure.

What You'll Bring

• Currently enrolled in the second or third year of an undergraduate degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business, Commerce, or a related discipline.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Experience with Microsoft Office applications; exposure to programming, databases, transportation, logistics, or data analysis concepts is considered an asset.
