Overview

As a member of the military, Air Weapons Systems Technicians maintain aircraft air weapons systems. They also perform explosives storage and handling, and provide Explosive Ordnance Disposal duties for the Air Force.

Their primary responsibilities are to:

  • Test, inspect and repair Air Weapons Systems
  • Perform quality assurance checks
  • Prepare and maintain aircraft forms and statistical data
  • Perform aircraft handling tasks that include:
  • Parking
  • Towing
  • Marshalling
  • Starting
  • Refueling
  • Cleaning
  • De-icing
  • Loading/unloading weapons
  • Weapons systems
  • Operate aircraft support equipment
Work environment

Air Weapons Systems Technicians are employed primarily at air bases in aircraft maintenance organizations, in maintenance hangers, shop environments and on flight lines. They may also perform duties onboard ships at sea or at deployed airfields, including some airborne tasks. Employment locations vary from Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) wings and bases across Canada, including the Arctic, to international sites.

If you join the Regular Force, after training, you'll be assigned to your first base, with possible relocations. In the Primary Reserve, you'll serve part-time at a local unit, typically one night per week and some weekends, with potential for full-time deployment.

No prior experience or specific skills are required. Recruiters will assess if your interests and attributes match the role.

The minimum education requirement is Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Grade 10 Math or equivalents. Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

The initial training is Basic Military Qualification, followed by specialized training at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering in Borden, Ontario, lasting about 32 weeks. It covers:

  • Tools and Test Equipment
  • Aircraft and AMSE Records
  • Flight Line Servicing
  • Maintaining Aircraft Weapon Systems
  • Loading/Unloading Operations
  • Explosives Inventory and Storage
  • Disposal of Surplus Ammunition

Opportunities for advanced and specialized courses are available, including:

Career progression may include advanced training in administration and leadership.

Part-time options

Available for Primary Reserve members, serving part-time at local units, with options for deployment and full-time service temporarily. They receive pay, benefits, and pension contributions comparable to the Regular Force.
