Overview

As a member of the military, Aviation Systems Technicians handle, service, and maintain Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) aircraft, ground equipment, and associated support facilities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Testing, inspecting, and repairing aviation systems
  • Performing quality assurance checks
  • Preparing and maintaining aircraft forms and data
  • Aircraft handling tasks such as parking, towing, marshalling, starting, refueling, cleaning, and de-icing
  • Operating aircraft support equipment

Work environment

Technicians work at air bases, maintenance hangars, on airborne aircraft, flight lines, tactical helicopter units, and ships. They may work shifts and overtime, with deployments across Canada and globally. Civilian postings and relocations are possible, especially for those in the Regular Force. Reserve members serve part-time, typically one night per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment.

Entry requirements

  • Minimum education: Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Math 416 / CST 4
  • Preferred: College diploma or Red Seal in related civilian occupation; foreign education may be accepted
  • Participation in NCMSTEP, which includes paid training at Canadian colleges, basic training, and on-the-job training

Training

Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification and specialized courses at CFSATE in Borden, Ontario, covering aircraft systems, electrical, structures, propulsion, and safety. Opportunities for advanced training and specialization are available, including courses in leadership, technical writing, and safety investigations.

Part-time options

Reserve members serve part-time at Canadian bases, with training lasting about 54 weeks. They serve up to 12 days per month, earning 92.8% of Regular Force pay, with benefits and pension eligibility. Opportunities for deployment and full-time service exist.
