Job summary

Fraser Health Authority in Mission, BC seeks an Activity Worker to carry out resident recreation and leisure programs that support health and well-being. You will lead engaging activities, prepare materials, supervise volunteers, and coordinate with nursing staff to ensure residents participate safely and enjoy diverse programs.

Qualifications include Grade 12 and Food Safe Level 1, with two years of related experience or an equivalent combination.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out established resident recreation/leisure programs (arts, crafts, sports, woodworking, cooking, horticulture, exercises, outings); set up and organize furnishings and equipment; teach techniques and monitor activities.
  • Coordinate activities outside the facility; ensure residents have appropriate clothing and equipment; verify plans with nursing/medical staff; coordinate movement during activities.
  • Provide direction to volunteers during programs; demonstratе techniques and give feedback.
  • Prepare and maintain bulletin boards, flip charts and materials advertising activities.
  • Inform housekeeping of monthly setup requirements; monitor, record and report issues to the Recreation Therapist.
  • Prepare food items with residents by counting, weighing and measuring ingredients; portion and serve items.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies; purchase necessary items in consultation with Recreation Therapist.
  • Organize and maintain program activity areas.
  • Provide input at planning meetings regarding resident participation in activities.

Detailed Overview

The Activity Worker carries out established recreation programs that support residents' health and well-being.

Responsibilities
  • Carries out established resident recreation/leisure programs such as arts and crafts, sports, woodworking, cooking, horticulture, exercises, and community outings; sets up and organizes furnishings and equipment for activity projects, teaches the techniques of related activities to residents; oversees resident activities and reports problems and/or changes to the Recreation Therapist.
  • Carries out resident recreation/leisure programs outside the facility; checks that residents have appropriate clothing and necessary equipment for the activity; confirms details of proposed activity with nursing/medical staff; coordinates the movement of residents during the activity and teaches the techniques of related activities.
  • Provides direction to volunteers during activity programs, demonstrates related techniques, and provides feedback as required.
  • Prepares and maintains bulletin boards, flip charts and other materials advertising available activities.
  • Informs contracted housekeeping of monthly set up requirements; monitors, records and/or raises issues to the Recreation Therapist.
  • Prepares food items with residents by counting, weighing and/or measuring ingredients, mixing beverage and food items and assembling food items. Portions out and serves food and beverages.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and materials, purchases necessary supplies for activities in consultation with the Recreation Therapist, and reports malfunctioning equipment and supply needs to the Recreation Therapist.
  • Organizes and maintains program activity areas.
  • Provides input and feedback with respect to recreation/leisure activities at regular planning meetings, such as resident participation in activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

Grade 12, completion of recognized recreational courses plus two years of recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Food Safe Level 1 Certificate.
