Job summary

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC) in Vancouver seeks an Accounting & Payroll Specialist to ensure accuracy of accounting systems, complete day-to-day bookkeeping, reconciliations, reports, and process improvements while collaborating with the Director and Finance Manager.

Candidates should have 2+ years of full-cycle accounting/payroll in Canada, an accounting diploma/degree, strong organizational and communication skills, and familiarity with ADP payroll.

About DEWC

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC) exists to support and empower women and children, living in extreme poverty in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, who are particularly vulnerable to violence, exploitation, injustice, and injury. Through low barrier Drop-In Centers and Emergency Shelters, DEWC provides basic need services, programs, and specialized supports to over 1000 women and children daily to help them survive the conditions that surround them. The Opportunity

The Accounting & Payroll Specialist works closely with the Director, Finance and the Manager, Finance as well as other department managers, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of DEWC accounting and financial systems and processes. This role is responsible for completing day-to-day bookkeeping responsibilities, account reconciliations, reporting, and process improvement. Reporting to the Manager, Finance, the Accounting & Payroll Specialist will work in collaboration with other DEWC staff to support smooth and accurate operations. She will work from a feminist perspective and with an anti-oppression framework.

About You
  • 2+ years full-cycle accounting/payroll experience preferably in a non-for-profit charitable organization in Canada and/or unionized environment
  • An accounting/payroll diploma/degree (or equivalent combination of education and/or experience).
  • Must possess strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication abilities.
  • Knowledge of ADP Payroll Processing System will be an asset
  • Requires some work outside of normal schedule to undertake position responsibilities, meet deadlines, and ensure delivery of high-quality programs and services.
  • Must have a strong working knowledge of the issues impacting women in the dtes, including gender-based violence, mental health, housing and substance use
