Job summary

Northern College in Timmins is seeking an Accessibility Student Advisor to join our Accessibility Services and Advising teams. You will provide advisement and direct services to students with disabilities, supporting their educational journeys and success.

Reporting to the Timmins Campus Manager, you will coordinate assessments, connect students with assistive technology, offer learning strategies, and collaborate with community partners to ensure inclusive, barrier-free access to college

Qualifications

• Two-year diploma in Psychology, Social Work, Education, Occupational Therapy, Disability Studies or related field.
• Applied Learning Disability Studies certificate or related Ontario College Graduate Certificate.
• Three years experience working with students with disabilities, preferably in a post-secondary environment.
• Experience in educational advising, group facilitation, and inclusive instruction.
• Knowledge of BSWD and CSG-PDSE guidelines and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Identify needs and provide ongoing advisement to all students and prospective students.
• Provide intake and initial assessment of needs; arrange educational assessments as needed.
• Recommend services such as assistive tech training, learning strategies, counselling, bursaries, and accommodations.
• Research new methods and learning strategies to meet individual student needs.
• Collaborate with external community agencies and professionals.
• Guide students through the full lifecycle and determine intervention strategies.
• Assess reports of conduct issues to determine intervention.

Reporting to the Timmins Campus Manager, the Accessibility Student Advisor is a front-line staff member that will offer advisement and direct services for the Accessibility Services and Advising Departments as part of a college-wide team.

What You Will Be Doing

• Identify needs and provide ongoing advice and support to all students and prospective students;
• Provide initial intake and initial assessment of needs and services; identifies student needs and arranges the provision of formal educational assessment services as needed;
• Recommend and coordinate appropriate services available such as assistive technology training, learning strategy training, counselling, bursaries, and academic accommodations;
• Research new and valid methods, strategies, and technology to assist students with disabilities in their learning and self-monitoring; develop new activities, interventions and learning strategy approaches using initiative and creativity, to meet individual student needs;
• Consult and collaborate with external community agencies, educators, counsellors, and health care professionals on a local as well as provincial scale;
• Provide comprehensive, student-centered support by guiding prospective and
• current students through the full student lifecycle; and
• Assess incoming reports of student code of conduct issue/concern to determine intervention strategy.

What You Will Need To Be Considered

• Two (2) year Diploma in Psychology, Social Work, Education, Occupational Therapy, Disability Studies or a related/relevant field;
• Applied Learning Disability Studies Certificate or related/relevant Ontario College Graduate Certificate;
• Three (3) years of experience working with students with various types of disabilities, preferably in a post-secondary environment;
• Experience in educational advising, group facilitation, and giving direction to diverse groups (considering variation in ages and experiences) with inclusivity and respect; and
• Knowledge in the Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD) and the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Person with Permanent Disabilities (CSG-PDSE) guidelines and related processes/procedures.

The successful candidate will have knowledge in threat assessment, crisis intervention, and case management, assistive devices, assistive technology, and learning strategies. They must also have excellent working knowledge of computers and use of a wide variety of software (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Kurzweil 3000, Read and Write, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Inspiration, etc.), Crisis Intervention certification(s) (i.e. mental health first aid, or ASIST, or SafeTalk) are considered an asset.
