Job summary

Pasadena Independent School District is seeking a Substitute Nurse to support student health services. This non-exempt, 187-day role reports to the Principal and Human Resources and provides nursing care, medication administration, and first aid in a school setting.

JOB TITLE: Substitute Nurse

STATUS: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO:Principal and Human Resources

TERMS: 187 Days (as needed)

PAY GRADE: RN $125/Daily Rate; LVN $105.00/Daily Rate

Primary Purpose:

Support student success by promoting, practicing, improving, and maintaining student, staff, and community health while serving as a substitute nurse.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Valid Registered Nurse License/ Licensed Vocational Nurse License

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Fluent in English(written and spoken)
  • Current practical working knowledge of nursing procedures and techniques relevant to children
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently to implement district policies and procedures

Experience:

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Performing comprehensive nursing assessment on students and staff by using clinical reasoning, synthesizing comprehensive data, providing nursing care, and evaluating, reporting, and documenting patient outcomes
  • Administering medications and treatments according to school district policies and the RN scope of practice (BON, 15.28, TAC, Rule 217.11)
  • Reporting any concerns related to child abuse (physical or mental) to administrators, law enforcement, and Texas Department of Family and Protective Services
  • Managing supplies and equipment
  • Reporting communicable disease cases as required to administrators and Lead Nurses
  • Assessing the severity of injuries and taking appropriate action
  • Performing first aid procedures effectively and efficiently
  • Anticipating changes in patient conditions and responding accordingly to include emergent care
  • Submitting school district accident reports periodically and notifying administrators and Lead Nursees
  • The substitute nurse should be prepared to seek out other school nurses to include district Lead Nurses or other health care providers when student conditions exceed the substitute nurse's level of competency or experience to ensure student safety.
