Assistant Facilities Manager (CL3)

Full-time Position, commencing approximately October 13, 2026.

Location: Sydney Waterfront Campus, Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Salary range: $76,058.94 to $89,481.11 annually.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, you will provide support in overseeing the day-to-day operations including safe and efficient maintenance of the buildings, HVAC equipment, shop equipment, vehicles and grounds of the Sydney Waterfront Campus. Responsibilities include managing building operations, maintaining equipment and campus grounds, and ensuring health, safety, cleanliness, appearance, and physical security standards are met in alignment with public post-secondary institutional requirements.

Please note that Sydney Waterfront Campus programming runs during daytime, evening and weekend hours and therefore this position requires flexible working hours including evenings and weekends.

  • Manage and supervise unionized custodial staff and their work assignments during the day-to-day and planned work activities.
  • Provide leadership and oversight within the entire Facilities' team in the absence of the Facilities Manager.
  • Ensure all related equipment and its maintenance are conducted as required at Sydney Waterfront Campus, in a timely and cost-effective manner, as directed by internal processes such as Megamation and in consultation with the Facilities Manager.
  • Work with the Facilities Manager to ensure that all related equipment for Sydney Waterfront Campus is accurately entered into Megamation in accordance with Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) guidelines.
Qualifications and Occupational Experience
  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is graduation from a recognized training program related to Trades Training or Building Services Technology in one or more of the following:
    • Red Seal Trades Certification
    • Certified Engineering Technologist
    • 3rd Class Power Engineer
    • Certification in Plumbing & Heating, Electrical or Building Related Trade
    • Building Environmental Systems Certificate
    • BMA Accreditation
    • Other industry-specific certifications from organizations such as the Building Owners & Managers Association (BOMA) or International Facilities Management Association (IFMA), and APPA (formerly known as the Association of Physical Plant Administrators).
  • You have a minimum of five (5) years (full-time equivalent) of recent supervisory experience leading a team in a facilities maintenance or building operations setting.
  • Experience in construction of industrial facilities and associated commissioning.
  • Demonstrated experience in Preventative Maintenance programs such as Megamation.
  • Experience in change management.
  • Occupational experience that includes facility management would be considered an asset.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, e-mail, and facility management software such as Megamation.
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional student experience.

  • You are able to perform all physical duties of the job as required for the operation and maintenance of the facilities and operation of small hand tools and shop equipment.
