Job summary

Shopee Brazil is seeking a Tax Controversy Lead to own end-to-end responses to tax authority actions across federal, state, and municipal levels. You will work with Legal, external counsel, and cross-functional teams to protect the company’s interests.

Ideal candidates have a law or accounting background, strong Excel/PowerPoint skills, and experience with tax litigation, with fluency in English and a collaborative, proactive mindset.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Law or Accounting.
• Advanced Excel and PowerPoint; familiarity with tax systems and AI productivity tools is a plus.
• Experience in tax controversy/administrative tax litigation with authorities.
• Fluency in English.

Responsibilities

• Own intake, triage and response of tax authority notifications and inspections (federal, state, municipal) for BR entities.
• Ensure compliance with statutory deadlines and coordinate on-site inspection support with authorities.
• Develop deep knowledge of Shopee’s business models, systems and data flows.
• Build an internal network across business, product, engineering and finance teams to obtain information quickly.
• Translate authority requests into precise internal data requirements and validate information.
• Maintain the controversy exposure map and report progression to Finance leadership.

What will your mission be?

Responsible for the end-to-end ownership of tax controversy for the group’s companies in Brazil: managing notifications, summonses, inspections and assessments from federal, state and municipal tax authorities, ensuring every response is delivered within statutory deadlines and with the highest technical quality. Build defense strategies together with Legal and external counsel, develop a deep understanding of Shopee’s operations and internal data flows to gather evidence effectively, and provide leadership with a clear view of exposure and case progression.

What your day-to-day will loo like:

• Coordinate on-site inspection support and act as the primary point of contact with tax authorities;


• Maintain complete and organized case files, deadline control and documentation;


• Own the intake, triage and response of all tax authority notifications, summonses and inspections (federal, state and municipal) for the BR entities;


• Guarantee compliance with statutory response deadlines, which are fixed by law and generally cannot be extended;


• Coordinate on-site inspection support and act as the primary point of contact with tax authorities;


• Maintain complete and organized case files, deadline control and documentation;


• Develop deep knowledge of Shopee’s business models, systems and data flows;


• Build an internal network across business, product, engineering and finance teams to obtain information and evidence quickly;


• Translate authority requests into precise internal data requirements and validate the accuracy of information provided;


• Maintain the controversy exposure map (cases, amounts, stages and probabilities), supporting provisioning assessments;


• Report case progression and exposure to Finance leadership on a regular cadence;


• Recommend preventive actions to compliance and advisory teams based on inspection trends.

Requirements

What you need to take on this challenge:

• Completed bachelor’s degree, preferably in Law or Accounting;


• Advanced Excel and PowerPoint, familiarity with tax systems and AI productivity tools is a plus;


• Experience in tax controversy / administrative tax litigation, dealing directly with federal, state and municipal authorities, preferably in large companies or law firms;


• Fluency in English.
