We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer for our Information Systems (IS) team. This role offers an opportunity for an automation-focused senior technologist passionate about Linux to build a career with Canonical and support those leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. Experience in IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code, and a passion for technology are essential.

Job Summary

The IS team maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, supporting over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE & Gitops engineer, you will drive operations automation in private and public clouds using open source infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines, and Canonical's automation products. You will also provide feedback to developers on product operation at scale, contribute to bug fixes and pull requests, and collaborate across teams. You will join a global team of SREs committed to delivering excellent services to our company, customers, and the Ubuntu Community.

Responsibilities

• Lead automation development and Gitops practices as an embedded tech lead
• Collaborate with IS architects to align solutions with architecture vision
• Design services as products for internal use
• Advance infrastructure as code practices, increasing automation and process improvements
• Automate software operations for reusability and consistency across clouds
• Maintain responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure
• Develop troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance skills, using observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch
• Support and collaborate with globally distributed teams
• Focus on larger projects and automation during dedicated development time
• Share expertise through design sessions, mentorship, and teamwork
• Handle time-critical escalations responsibly

Qualifications

• Experience with infrastructure as code across private and public clouds
• Product mindset focused on developing products, not just solutions
• Proficiency in Python with large projects
• Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration systems
• Managing and deploying cloud infrastructure via code
• Knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls
• Familiarity with Linux storage solutions like Ceph and databases
• Hands-on Linux server administration experience
• Understanding of cloud computing concepts and technologies
• Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or related field
• Effective communication skills in English (email, chat, video, in-person)
• Strong troubleshooting skills from kernel to web
• Quick learner with flexibility and adaptability
• Interest in fast-changing environments and open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian
