We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer for our Information Systems (IS) team. This role offers an opportunity for an automation-focused senior technologist passionate about Linux to build a career with Canonical and contribute to the success of Ubuntu and open source products. If you have experience in IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code, and a passion for technology, you'll enjoy working with some of the best in the industry at Canonical.

Job Summary

The IS team supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, serving over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE & Gitops engineer, you'll drive operations automation in our private and public clouds using open source infrastructure as code tools, CI/CD pipelines, and Canonical's automation products. You'll also improve Canonical products by providing feedback to developers, submitting bugs, and collaborating on design and implementation. You'll be part of a global team supporting services for our company, customers, and the Ubuntu Community.

Responsibilities

• Lead automation development and Gitops as an embedded tech lead
• Collaborate with IS architect to align solutions with architecture vision
• Design and architect services to be offered as products
• Develop infrastructure as code practices, increasing automation and improving processes
• Automate software operations for reusability and consistency across clouds
• Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure
• Develop troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance skills; set up observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch; maintain monitoring and alerting systems
• Assist and collaborate with globally distributed engineering, operations, and support teams
• Focus on larger projects and automation of manual tasks with dedicated development time
• Share knowledge and best practices through design sessions and mentorship
• Handle time-critical escalations

Qualifications

• Modern hosting architecture driven by infrastructure as code across clouds
• Product mindset focusing on developing products, not just solutions
• Experience with Python in large projects
• Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration systems
• Proven ability to manage and deploy cloud infrastructure via code
• Practical Linux networking, routing, and firewall knowledge
• Familiarity with Linux storage solutions like Ceph and databases
• Hands-on Linux server administration experience
• Deep understanding of cloud computing concepts and technologies
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or related field
• Effective communication skills in English (email, chat, video, in-person)
• Motivated troubleshooting from kernel to web, willing to ask for help when needed
• Flexibility and quick learner
• Inspired by fast-changing environments
• Comfortable working in distributed teams
• Passionate about open-source, especially Ubuntu or Debian
