We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer for our Information Systems (IS) team. This role is ideal for an automation-first senior technologist passionate about Linux, aiming to build a career with Canonical and support those leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. If you have experience in IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code, and a passion for technology, you'll thrive here.

Job Summary

The IS team supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, serving over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE & Gitops Engineer, you'll drive operations automation in our private and public clouds using open source infrastructure as code tools, CI/CD pipelines, and Canonical's automation products. You will also provide feedback to developers to improve product operation at scale, contribute to open source projects, and collaborate across teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead automation and Gitops initiatives as a technical lead within your team.
• Align solutions with the IS architecture vision by collaborating with the IS architect.
• Design and develop services to be offered as products by IS.
• Advance infrastructure as code practices, increasing automation and process improvements.
• Automate software operations across clouds, considering distributed system complexities.
• Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure.
• Enhance troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance monitoring using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch.
• Support and collaborate with global engineering, operations, and support teams.
• Focus on larger projects and automation during dedicated development time.
• Share expertise through design sessions, mentorship, and collaborative work.
• Handle time-critical escalations responsibly.

Qualifications

• Experience with hosting architecture driven by infrastructure as code across private and public clouds.
• Product mindset focused on developing products rather than just solutions.
• Proficiency in Python, especially with large projects.
• Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration systems.
• Proven ability to manage and deploy cloud infrastructure with code.
• Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls.
• Familiarity with Linux storage solutions like Ceph and databases.
• Hands-on experience administering enterprise Linux servers.
• Deep understanding of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or related field.
• Effective communication skills in English via multiple channels.
• Strong troubleshooting skills from kernel to web, with a collaborative attitude.
• Willingness to learn quickly and adapt to fast-changing environments.
• Comfort working within distributed teams.
• Passion for open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
