Data Governance Scrum Master role responsibilities and qualifications are outlined below.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Agile Delivery & Execution – Facilitate Agile ceremonies including Daily Standups, Sprint Planning, Reviews, and Retrospectives.
- Drive structured execution of Data Governance initiatives such as data stewardship, catalog, data mapping, data quality enablement.
- Track sprint progress using metrics such as velocity, burndown, and backlog health.
- Ensure transparency of progress, risks, and dependencies across stakeholders.
- Backlog & Product Alignment – Partner with Product Owners and Data Governance leads to manage and refine governance backlog.
- Ensure priorities align with regulatory requirements, enterprise priorities, and business value.
- Support roadmap execution across Data Governance programs.
- Agile Coaching, Continuous Improvement & Impediment Removal – Identify and remove obstacles that impact team delivery and effectiveness.
- Coach teams, stakeholders, and leaders on Agile principles and best practices.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, high-quality delivery, and Agile maturity.
- Enable teams to self-organize, improve performance, and adopt Agile ways of working across Data Governance.
- Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication – Foster effective collaboration between Data Governance, Privacy, Technology, and Business teams.
- Promote transparency, alignment, and clear communication across stakeholders.
- Support cross-functional decision-making and governance processes.
- Governance Program Enablement – Support execution of Data Governance priorities including:
- Data stewardship programs
- Data quality initiatives
- Data catalog and metadata management
- Regulatory data mapping and compliance activities
- Ensure Agile practices are embedded into governance workflows and delivery models.
Qualifications
- 4–6 years of experience leading Agile teams as a Scrum Master.
- Strong expertise in Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban).
- Experience using Agile delivery tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, TFS.
- Strong understanding of backlog management, sprint tracking, and Agile metrics.
- Proven ability to coach and mentor teams and leadership.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to influence without authority and lead through collaboration.
- High emotional intelligence and ability to navigate complex environments.
- Experience working in large enterprises; financial services preferred.
- Understanding of data governance, data management, or regulated environments is a plus.
Additional Knowledge & Skills
- Ability to use AI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot) to support daily work.
- Skills in evaluating AI outputs for accuracy, compliance, and bias.
- Experience integrating AI into workflows to improve efficiency or insights.
- Familiarity with AI assisted research, summarization, and content generation.
- Understanding of responsible AI use, including ethics and data protection.
Certifications & Education
- Scrum Master Certification required (CSM, PSM I, PMI-ACP).
- Advanced certifications preferred (PSM II, A-CSM, PSM III, CSP-SM).
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience preferred.
