Hennepin County's Transportation Operations Traffic Division is seeking a Highway Maintenance Operator for our Sign Shop. This full-time, benefit-earning position supports year-round traffic initiatives and maintenance of county road signs, pavement markings, and guardrail assets, as well as snow and ice control operations.

Location: Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340. Work hours are Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with various shifts including day, evening, overnight, holiday, and weekends. New Employee Orientation (NEO) is in-person in downtown Minneapolis.

Position Overview

This role involves working with traffic control for work zones, assisting with installation and maintenance of signs, markings, and safety features, performing sight distance reviews, supporting asset management through data collection, and snow and ice control.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid Class B driver’s license with airbrake endorsement; Class A license with additional endorsements required within one year.
• At least one year of experience in road construction/maintenance, operation of large commercial vehicles, or related fields.
• Ability to lift up to 70 pounds, perform manual labor in all weather conditions, and obtain a Hennepin County driver’s permit.

Preferred Qualifications

• Training in signs, pavement markings, or guardrails.
• Experience with government public works, sign and roadway maintenance, teamwork, and software tools like MS Office, Asset Management, Sign CAD, or Flexi.
• Knowledge of safe equipment operation and manual tools.
• Ability to follow directions, perform manual labor, make minor repairs, and communicate effectively.
