Global Fishing Watch (GFW) has been creating the first global dataset of fishing based on vessel tracking data for nearly 10 years. We develop tools and data products to make this information actionable through online platforms, APIs, and research publications.

The Data Team manages data quality, documentation, accessibility, and ethical review of data products. We are expanding this team to ensure the highest quality of data across all GFW products.

Role

The Data Quality Analyst will ensure data quality and delivery across all GFW products, including:

• Conducting quality assurance checks on datasets like AIS, VMS, SAR, VIIRS, etc.
• Making QA processes visible internally and publicly, and owning the QA roadmap.
• Promoting a QA culture and coordinating cross-team QA efforts.

Responsibilities

• Review methodology changes and assess data quality across various data types.
• Develop automated quality control checks with Engineering.
• Understand data pipelines and manage QA tasks via JIRA.
• Improve release processes and promote QA best practices.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or equivalent experience in relevant fields.
• Experience in QA/QC processes, data analysis, and scripting (SQL, Python, R).
• Proficiency in data visualization tools.
• Experience with public data products and evolving data quality practices.

Preferred Skills

• Strong communication, data ethics, and big data pipeline knowledge.
• Experience in fisheries monitoring or related fields.
• Fluency in Spanish and Google BigQuery knowledge.

Additional Details

This is a remote, fixed-term (2-year) role, open to candidates in specified countries. Compensation varies by location, and the application deadline is May 13, 2025. The process includes multiple interviews and a technical assessment.
