A non-profit organization in Brussels seeks a motivated Senior Accountant to oversee daily operations of the accounting team. This role involves ensuring transaction accuracy, compliance with internal policies, and financial reporting efficiency. Ideal candidates should have a bachelor's degree in accountancy and at least 5 years of progressive accounting experience. Proficiency in accounting software and strong command of Belgian financial principles is essential. The role also offers the chance to evolve into a Team Leader position.
The mission of the finance department is to ensure that the financial statements provide a true and fair view of MSF Belgium's financial position and to ensure optimal use of financial resources.
The Accounting & Treasury Unit manages MSF's financial flows by ensuring transaction recording, cash flow monitoring, and compliance with accounting and financial obligations.
To strengthen our Accounting & Treasury department at our Brussels Head Office, we invite you to join us as a motivated accountant to participate in the accounting and administrative management of our organization.
In collaboration with the department head and other team members, you will actively contribute to the proper functioning and reliability of our financial processes.
As the Senior Accountant, you will oversee the daily operations of the accounting team, ensuring that all financial transactions are processed with accuracy, timeliness, and in full compliance with internal policies and external regulatory standards. You will serve as a hands‑on accounting expert and actively support staff development, driving process improvements, and fostering effective collaboration across the accounting function. In addition, this position offers the opportunity to evolve into a Team Leader role, taking on broader responsibilities in guiding the team and shaping strategic initiatives within the accounting department.
Manage day-to-day accounting activities independently, including data entry, account reconciliation, and analytical allocations for assigned areas of responsibility
Review journal entries, reconciliations, and other accounting work prepared by other accountants
Maintain and monitor the general ledger, ensuring proper classification and recording of financial transactions
Provide technical guidance on complex accounting issues, ensuring adherence to accounting policies and best practices
Review and analyse accounting data to detect inconsistencies or unusual trends. Investigates issues and recommends improvements to strengthen controls, accuracy, and reporting efficiency
Liaise with external auditors during financial and operational audits, providing necessary accounting records, documentation, and explanations
Ensure adherence to internal controls, company policies, and accounting standards as applicable
Recommend updates to accounting procedures to enhance internal controls and efficiency
Monitor regulatory changes and ensure the accounting team maintains compliance with all statutory and internal requirements
Streamline accounting workflows to reduce redundancies and improve accuracy and turnaround time
Evaluate accounting systems and tools; recommend upgrades or process automation where beneficial
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize processes and support organizational objectives
Participate in cross-functional projects aimed at improving financial data integrity and reporting capabilities
Minimum bachelor’s degree in accountancy
Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience
Strong command of Belgian financial accounting principles
Proficiency with accounting softwares (e.g. Adfinity)
Certified Public Accountant or equivalent certification is an asset
Knowledge of the legal and tax framework applicable to associations and non‑profit organizations in Belgium is an asset
Excellent computer skills ( Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint/Cloud, online research)
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and respect for deadlines
Reliable, trustworthy, and with a strong sense of responsibility
Comfortable working in a small‑sized department within a complex organization
Proactive, pragmatic, and solution‑oriented
Curious, analytical, and eager to learn
Willing to share best practices and promote knowledge transfer
Proficiency in French and English, both spoken and written is mandatory
Expected starting date: As soon as possible
Location: Brussels (Belgium)
Contract type: Open-ended contract – Full-time – Homeworking possible per MSF policy
Salary according to MSF‑OCB Head Office grid
