Job summary

Hitachi Energy Ltd. in Belgium is seeking a Power Electronics Hardware Research and Development Engineer to lead the development of next-generation power electronic hardware for grid modernization, electrification, renewable energy, and transformer applications.

You will drive innovation in converters, PCBAs, EMI/EMC design and system integration, perform schematic capture, layout reviews, testing, and collaborate with controls, software, and manufacturing teams.

Qualifications

• MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or related field.
• At least 5 years of hardware design experience for power electronics.
• Proven PCB design and development including schematic capture and DFM/DFT.

Responsibilities

• Lead R&D activities focused on power electronics hardware for converter systems.
• Design PCB layouts and engineering packages for PCBA, including gate-drive and sensing circuits.
• Perform schematic capture, stack-up definition, layout reviews, and design verification.
• Develop hardware solutions using wide bandgap semiconductors.
• Lead EMI/EMC design, testing, mitigation, and compliance.
• Collaborate with controls, software, transformer, insulation, mechanical, and manufacturing teams.

The Opportunity

Hitachi Energy is seeking a Power Electronics Hardware Research and Development Engineer to lead the development of next-generation power electronic hardware for grid modernization, electrification, renewable energy, and advanced transformer applications. In this role, you will drive innovation in power electronics, converter hardware, PCBA design, EMI/EMC design and compliance, and system integration technologies.

How You Will Make an Impact

• Lead R&D activities focused on power electronics hardware for power converter systems
• Design PCB layouts and create engineering packages for PCBAs, including gate-drive and sensing circuits, protection, control boards, and auxiliary power supplies.
• Perform schematic capture, component selection, stack-up definition, layout reviews, and design verification of complex multilayer PCB assemblies.
• Develop hardware solutions utilizing wide bandgap power semiconductors.
• Lead EMI/EMC design activities including emissions mitigation, grounding, shielding, isolation, and filter development.
• Conduct simulation, laboratory testing, prototype validation, and failure analysis.
• Collaborate with controls, software, transformer, insulation, mechanical, and manufacturing teams.
• Drive innovation through patents, publications, and technology transfer.

Your Background

• M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or related field.
• At least 5 years of experience in power electronics hardware design and validation.
• Demonstrated experience designing converters or grid-connected power conversion equipment.
• Proven experience in PCBA design and development including schematic capture, layout review, DFM, and DFT.
• Expertise in EMI/EMC design, troubleshooting, compliance testing, and mitigation techniques.
• Knowledge of high-voltage isolation, creepage and clearance requirements, and safety-critical hardware design.
• Experience with different types of semiconductor devices.
• Experience with laboratory instrumentation and EMC test equipment.
• Excellent communication and technical leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Altium Designer (or similar) for PCB design.
• Experience with Ansys FEA toolset to model and simulate the EMI/EMC performance of power electronic based systems.
• Knowledge of reliability analysis methods including FMEA and root-cause failure analysis.
• Experience integrating DSP, FPGA, and embedded control platforms into power electronic products.
