About this job

At Toyota Motor Europe in Zaventem, this internship in the NV &Driveability team focuses on virtual development of road noise. The intern will analyse tire, rim, and suspension vibration modes, optimise assessment methods, validate simulations with CAE tools, and support physical testing to reduce vehicle cabin noise and improve driving comfort.

Get to know your team and responsibilities

TME R&D centre is responsible for planning, development and production support of vehicles aimed at - and locally produced for - the European market.

The “NV & Driveability” team is part of the Vehicle Performance Engineering division (VPE) and is responsible for the vehicle NVH (Noise, Vibration and harshness) according to EU customer expectations. We aim at the development of attractive and “fun to drive” cars matching European market requirements and customer expectations. Using state‑of‑the‑art experimental and numerical methods, we develop strategies to achieve the targets and validate them on virtual and physical prototypes.

Your project

Tire rolling noise, or road noise, is one of the main sources of noise in modern cars, becoming more impactful on customer expectations with the increased share of hybrid and electric powertrains. To achieve a low level of road noise in the vehicle cabin, the forces entering the vehicle body through the suspension must be minimised. An important aspect is the control of the different modes in the tire, rim, and suspension. By transitioning to the virtual development of these components, we can accelerate time‑to‑market while simultaneously lowering CO2 emissions and reducing costs.

You will contribute to an ongoing research project where the main goal is to build a detailed understanding of the different modes along the road noise path, how they contribute to the force transmission, and how they can be controlled through specific properties of the components involved. You will:

  • Optimize the existing procedures for component/subassembly mode assessment.
  • Validate findings and support component/subassembly development through CAE software.
  • Confirm findings by physical component/subassembly updates.
