Centrica plc is seeking a Research Engineer – Connectivity & Smart Devices to explore how connected devices and interoperability standards can accelerate the energy transition. You will prototype with Raspberry Pi, edge gateways and smart devices, evaluating protocols and security across experiments.

Based in Antwerp with UK travel, the role combines hands-on engineering with collaboration across Energised Futures and external partners to produce actionable recommendations and demonstrations.

Qualifications

• Solid foundations in computer networking and Internet protocols.
• Programming experience in Python, Rust, C/C++ or similar.
• Hands-on experience with Raspberry Pi, embedded Linux, microcontrollers.
• Knowledge of device communication protocols and integration patterns.
• Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software connectivity problems.
• Understanding of connected-device cybersecurity.
• Experience conducting structured technical investigations or experimental engineering.
• Ability to communicate technical findings clearly through reports, presentations and demonstrations.

Responsabilités

• Research and evaluate connectivity technologies and interoperability standards.
• Design experiments to evaluate performance, reliability, scalability and security for energy applications.
• Translate experimental findings into clear recommendations for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Build proof-of-concept systems using Raspberry Pi, embedded Linux, edge gateways and smart energy devices.
• Develop software for device communication, protocol integration and data acquisition.
• Connect physical devices to edge and cloud platforms to demonstrate end-to-end energy use cases.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external partners; produce technical reports and demonstrator documentation.
