About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced AI Architect to join a major Belgian federal public-sector organisation on an initial 12-month freelance assignment.
The successful candidate will play a key role in defining and maintaining the organisation's enterprise AI architecture, ensuring the secure, responsible and scalable adoption of Generative AI, Machine Learning and Agentic AI.
Working closely with enterprise architects, security specialists, data teams and technical stakeholders, you will establish architectural standards, reference architectures and integration patterns that enable AI solutions to integrate seamlessly into existing enterprise systems.
This role requires a strong combination of enterprise architecture expertise, modern AI technology knowledge and practical experience guiding solutions from proof of concept into production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define and maintain target architectures and reference architectures for Generative AI, Machine Learning and Agentic AI.
- Establish architectural standards for cloud, on-premises and hybrid AI environments.
- Ensure AI solutions align with enterprise architecture principles, business requirements and operational standards.
- Evaluate emerging AI technologies and recommend appropriate architectural approaches.
AI Platforms, LLMs & Integration
- Define architectural frameworks for AI Gateways, Model Context Protocol (MCP), LLMs, AI agents and retrieval architectures.
- Establish integration patterns covering APIs, event-driven systems, model access and enterprise applications.
- Support architectural decisions relating to model serving, evaluation, observability, logging and lifecycle management.
- Identify reusable AI platform services and integration components.
Security, Privacy & Governance
- Embed security, privacy and operational resilience into AI architecture by design.
- Define architectural safeguards for identity, least-privilege access, data minimisation, isolation and traceability.
- Translate regulatory and security requirements into practical architectural principles and controls.
- Conduct architecture reviews, identify technical risks and manage architectural dependencies.
Technical Leadership & Production Delivery
- Guide delivery teams through architectural decisions, technical trade-offs and implementation challenges.
- Produce architectural documentation, reference designs and Architecture Decision Records (ADRs).
- Support the transition of AI solutions from experimentation and proof of concept into secure production environments.
- Collaborate with enterprise architecture, platform engineering, security and data teams to ensure consistent delivery.
- Extensive experience in Solution Architecture, Enterprise Architecture or IT Architecture within complex enterprise environments.
- Strong knowledge of Generative AI, LLMs, Machine Learning and AI platform architectures.
- Understanding of agentic AI, retrieval architectures, model serving, evaluation and observability.
- Experience with enterprise integration, APIs and event-driven architecture patterns.
- Knowledge of AI Gateway concepts, MCP and AI integration frameworks.
- Strong understanding of security, privacy, identity management and architectural governance.
- Experience defining reference architectures, non-functional requirements, architectural standards and ADRs.
- Ability to guide multidisciplinary technical teams and communicate architectural decisions to stakeholders.
- Experience supporting AI or enterprise technology solutions through to production.
- Experience within the Belgian public sector, federal government or regulated environments.
- Knowledge of Belgian G-Cloud or OISZ (Public Institutions of Social Security).
- Experience establishing reusable AI platform services and enterprise AI integration patterns.
- Familiarity with responsible AI practices and AI governance frameworks.
Personal Skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, excellent stakeholder communication, collaborative working style and the ability to translate complex architectural challenges into practical solutions.
Candidates should demonstrate an innovative mindset, sound technical judgement and the ability to influence architectural decisions across multidisciplinary teams.
Application Requirements
Interested candidates should provide:
- An updated CV in English.
- Daily rate excluding VAT and availability.
- A brief explanation of their suitability against the requirements.
- A maximum two-page statement outlining their vision for the safe and responsible adoption of AI within a federal public-sector organisation, including AI architecture, integration, governance and the transition from experimentation to production.
This is an opportunity to shape the enterprise AI architecture of a major Belgian public-sector organisation and support the delivery of secure, scalable and sustainable AI solutions.
