Job summary

IUIH Institute for Urban Indigenous Health is seeking a Youth Wellbeing Worker to support vulnerable young Indigenous people aged 12–17 across the MATSICHS area. The role focuses on improving access to primary health care through culturally safe, trauma-informed advocacy and care coordination.

You will work within a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with services across health, education and social sectors to address social, financial, and legal needs while promoting respectful engagement

Qualifications

• Experience working with vulnerable young people aged 12–17 years.
• Trauma-informed and culturally sensitive practice.
• Advocacy across social health, education and justice sectors.
• Strong community engagement and development skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide culturally safe, trauma-informed support and advocacy to young Indigenous people aged 12–17 with health and social needs.
• Coordinate care with MATSICHS services, including medical care, social health support and counselling.
• Refer and advocate to agencies to address social, financial, legal and educational challenges.
• Build cooperative relationships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous community organisations.

About the role

As Youth Wellbeing Worker, your role is to provide culturally sensitive and trauma-informed support and advocacy services to vulnerable, young Indigenous people (aged 12 – 17 years) with mental health, alcohol and other drug, social and/or criminal justice challenges across the MATSICHS service area, with specific emphasis on improving youth access to comprehensive primary health care services.

Your day to day duties may include:

• Support young Indigenous people in engaging with MATSICHS services, including medical care and specialised Social Health support services, including care coordination, psychological intervention and counselling.
• Facilitate young people’s access through referral and advocacy to appropriate agencies and support networks as necessary to help address social, financial, legal, educational and vocational challenges.
• Advocate on behalf of young people, when dealing with various systems, community programs, and agencies e.g. Child Protection, Justice, Police, Centrelink, schools and hospitals and mental health facilities.
• Establish effective and continuous cooperative working relationships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous community organisations relevant to your client needs.
• Promote the services of MATSICHS clinics at events and activities targeted to and/or involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples based within the North Brisbane catchment area.

About you

• Current Criminal History Check.
• Current C Class Drivers Licence (QLD).
• Current Working with Children’s Check (Qld Blue Card).
• Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable young people aged 12 to 17 years old, including individual youth work and community engagement/development programs.
• Certificate III in Youth Work and/or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health.
