Job description

Structural Steel, Platework & Piping Fabrication

Industry: Oil & Gas | Mining | Resources | Infrastructure

The Opportunity

Burgess Personnel is recruiting an experienced Workshop Supervisor for an established and expanding engineering and fabrication business located in Perth’s southern industrial corridor.

Our client specialises in structural steel, heavy platework and process piping fabrication, delivering high-specification work to the oil and gas, mining and infrastructure sectors.

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you’ll take ownership of daily workshop operations, production planning, quality compliance and workforce development.

The Managing Director is highly regarded within the industry and has ambitious plans for the business. This is an excellent opportunity to work alongside an experienced industry professional and grow with the company.

The Role

We’re looking for a technically strong, hands‑on supervisor who takes pride in quality workmanship and developing tradespeople.

Not every tradesperson enters a workshop with the experience required for high‑specification fabrication. We need someone who can recognise potential, develop capability and consistently maintain the standards expected by demanding clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise daily structural steel, platework and piping fabrication activities.
  • Coordinate production schedules, labour allocation, resources and workshop priorities.
  • Monitor productivity, fabrication progress and project deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with AFC drawings, approved welding procedures, project specifications and applicable fabrication standards.
  • Oversee dimensional inspections, fit-up, weld quality and fabrication tolerances.
  • Coordinate QA/QC requirements, ITPs, inspection hold points, NCRs and material traceability.
  • Identify causes of rework and implement corrective actions to improve fabrication quality and efficiency.
  • Mentor and develop tradespeople, identifying competency gaps and training requirements.
  • Lead pre‑starts, toolbox talks and workshop safety initiatives.
  • Maintain production records, workshop documentation and equipment inspection requirements.
About You
  • Recognised trade qualification in Engineering (Fabrication Trade), Boilermaker/Welder, or a relevant mechanical trade discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years’ post-trade experience in structural steel, platework and/or piping fabrication.
  • Demonstrated Workshop Supervisor or senior Leading Hand experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of fabrication methodologies, welding processes, dimensional tolerances and quality requirements.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, fabrication details and piping isometrics.
  • Sound understanding of QA/QC processes, welding procedures and fabrication documentation.
  • Proven leadership skills with a genuine ability to mentor and develop tradespeople.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
Highly Regarded
  • Experience in high‑specification oil and gas, mining or resources fabrication.
  • Knowledge of AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS 5131, AS 4041 and applicable ASME codes.
  • Experience working within an ISO 9001-certified Quality Management System.
  • Familiarity with MS Project, Simpro, Pronto or similar systems.
  • Certificate IV in WHS or Leadership and Management.
Why Join?
  • Work directly with a respected Managing Director who values experience and initiative.
  • Join an expanding business with genuine long‑term career progression.
  • Lead technically challenging fabrication projects where quality matters.
  • Have a direct influence on workshop performance, trade development and operational improvements.
  • Secure a permanent role with an established engineering and fabrication company.
