West Recruitment is seeking an experienced Workshop Manager to lead a heavy equipment repair and refurbishment operation in Kempsey. You will be hands-on on the tools while steering a small team to deliver safe, efficient outcomes.

In this role you will manage costs, coordinate inventory and workflow, drive productivity and maintain high safety standards in a busy workshop and yard setting.

  • Manage parts, inventory and procurement, including identification.
  • Oversee plant, equipment and site maintenance, ensuring safety and order.
  • Drive cost control, productivity and efficiency to improve profitability.
  • Identify operational improvements and report to management.

With an established workshop environment, the business is looking for an experienced trade professional who can take ownership of workshop operations while remaining genuinely hands-on.

This is an opportunity to join a practical, close-knit team where your mechanical expertise, leadership and commercial judgement will have a direct impact on the success of the operation.

About Your New Role

As Workshop Manager, you will take overall responsibility for the safe, efficient and profitable operation of the workshop and yard.

This is a hands-on leadership role suited to someone who enjoys being on the tools while also having the capability to lead a team, manage costs, coordinate inventory and make sound commercial decisions.

This is a permanent, full time role working a Monday-Friday day roster. The workshop is located in Kempsey.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and coach the workshop team, fostering a safe, accountable and high-performing culture.
  • Remain hands-on with heavy machinery dismantling, component assessment, repair and refurbishment.
  • Manage parts, inventory and procurement, including component identification.
  • Oversee plant, equipment and site maintenance, ensuring the workshop and yard remain safe, organised and operational.
  • Drive cost control, productivity and efficiency, balancing repair costs, turnaround times, reuse and value recovery.
  • Identify operational improvements and risks, providing practical recommendations to management to improve workshop performance and profitability.

About You

Ideally, you will bring:

  • Trade qualification in heavy diesel, mechanical or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on heavy equipment experience, including dismantling, component assessment, repair and refurbishment.
  • Workshop leadership experience, with the ability to lead and develop a team.
  • Strong mechanical diagnostics, parts identification and inventory management skills, including CAT SIS or equivalent.
  • Commercially minded and practical, with sound judgement around repair, replacement, cost and value recovery.
  • Strong communicator and accountable leader who is adaptable, solutions-focused and willing to lead from the front.
