Job summary

Talent Focus in Sydney seeks an experienced Workshop Fitter / Machinist to join a busy production workshop in Smithfield, specialising in the repair, overhaul and maintenance of mechanical components and equipment.

You will perform planned and reactive maintenance, assembly and disassembly, fault finding, and testing on CNC machinery, press brakes, conveyors and fixed plant, reading engineering drawings and working safely to minimise downtime.

Qualifications

• Essential: Mechanical trade qualification or equivalent with hands-on workshop experience.
• Proven ability to maintain production machinery and fixed plant safely.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical/engineering drawings.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, repair, assemble and modify mechanical equipment and fixed plant.
• Perform planned and preventive maintenance plus reactive repairs.
• Fault finding, diagnostics and remedial mechanical works.
• Work on CNC machinery, press brakes and conveyors.
• Inspect and replace worn components and ensure proper alignment.
• Document maintenance activities accurately and safely.

Location: Smithfield | Permanent Full-Time | Workshop-Based
We are currently seeking an experienced Workshop Fitter / Machinist to join an established industrial organisation based in Smithfield, specialising in the manufacture, repair and overhaul of mechanical components and equipment.
This is a hands‑on workshop role suited to a Mechanical Fitter, Maintenance Fitter, Fitter Machinist or Mechanical Technician who has experience working with production machinery, fixed plant and industrial equipment.

The successful candidate will be mechanically minded, comfortable working with machinery and assemblies, and capable of carrying out planned maintenance, breakdown repairs, remedial works, assembly and disassembly of mechanical equipment.

About the Role

Working within a busy workshop and production environment, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, assembling and modifying mechanical equipment and fixed plant.

The role will involve:

• Assembly and disassembly of mechanical equipment, machinery and components
• Planned and preventative maintenance of fixed plant and production machinery
• Carrying out reactive maintenance and breakdown repairs as required
• Fault finding, diagnostics and remedial mechanical works
• Working on press brakes, CNC machinery, conveyors and other production equipment
• Maintenance and repair of mechanical drive systems, bearings, shafts, gearboxes, couplings and associated components
• Inspecting machinery and identifying worn, damaged or failed components
• Replacing, repairing and modifying mechanical components
• Reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, engineering drawings and technical documentation
• Using hand tools, power tools and workshop machinery
• Supporting machining, fitting and fabrication activities where required
• Setting up, aligning and fitting mechanical components and assemblies
• Testing machinery and equipment following maintenance or repair
• Maintaining accurate maintenance and repair documentation
• Working safely and efficiently within a production and workshop environment
• Responding to reactive maintenance requirements to minimise production downtime

Essential Skills & Experience

• Mechanical trade qualification such as Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade or equivalent
• Demonstrated experience maintaining production machinery or fixed plant
• Experience with mechanical assembly and disassembly
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical and engineering drawings
• Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills
• Experience carrying out preventative and reactive maintenance
• Ability to conduct remedial repairs and component replacement
• Confident using hand and power tools
• Strong understanding of mechanical principles
• Ability to work independently and as part of a workshop/maintenance team
• Strong commitment to safety, quality and minimising equipment downtime

Forklift and overhead crane experience would be highly regarded.
