Job summary

Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education invites applications for the VET Head of Learning and Teaching from experienced leaders in vocational education. Purpose of the Position

The VET Head of Learning and Teaching is responsible for leading the operational delivery of VET programs to ensure contractual obligations, performance targets, quality standards, and learner outcomes are achieved.

The role oversees VET Senior Lecturers, supporting the planning, coordination, monitoring, and continuous improvement of high-quality, industry-aligned and compliant training and assessment services. The position also plays a key role in building team capability through professional learning, coaching, mentoring and targeted professional development initiatives, ensuring staff are equipped to deliver educational excellence and respond to emerging industry and stakeholder needs.

Duties

• Lead, support, and manage the performance of Senior Lecturers to achieve excellence in teaching and learning delivery for the VET division.
• Foster a high-performance, student-centered teaching culture that reflects best practices and continuous improvement.
• Work collaboratively with the VET division and stakeholders to ensure alignment between educational delivery and organisational strategy.
• Lead the planning, coordination, and operational oversight of VET delivery to ensure contractual obligations, performance targets, and key deliverables are achieved.
• Monitor delivery performance, resource allocation, enrolment activity, and workforce capacity to support efficient and effective program delivery.
• Ensure all teaching and learning practices meet relevant national regulatory and compliance requirements (e.g., ASQA, or other applicable regulatory bodies).
• Monitor and report on training quality, learner outcomes, and educator performance metrics.
• Guide the design, development, and review of VET curriculum and training programs to ensure relevance, innovation, and alignment with industry standards.
• Support projects lead in delivering curriculum and resource development initiatives on time and to specification.
• Support, when necessary, the Director of VET to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to maintain responsive and future-focused training solutions.
• Coordinate and deliver professional learning, coaching, mentoring, and professional development activities to build the capability and capacity of teaching teams.
• Promote ongoing professional development and instructional excellence across the teaching team.
• Identify staff training needs and implement initiatives to enhance educator capabilities in pedagogy, technology, and compliance.
• Undertake other reasonable duties as directed by your line manager.

Selection Criteria

• Relevant qualification in education, training, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience in leading vocational training teams or managing teaching and learning functions in a VET context, including planning, coordinating, and monitoring training delivery to achieve contractual obligations, performance targets, and organisational outcomes.
• Strong knowledge of curriculum development, instructional design, and adult learning principles.
• In-depth understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements in the education and training sector, including the Standards for RTOs and quality assurance frameworks.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills in a vocational training context.
• Proven ability to lead operational performance and drive continuous improvement in training delivery, teaching practices, learner outcomes, and contract performance.
• Demonstrated ability to build workforce capability through coaching, mentoring, professional learning, and professional development initiatives.
• Proven ability to drive continuous improvement in teaching practices and learner outcomes in a vocational training context.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in culturally diverse teams within the social, political, and cultural environments of Indigenous Australian families, communities, and organisations.
• Highly effective interpersonal skills including proficient written and oral communication which can be adapted to meet the needs of people from all educational levels.
• Ability to build strong relationships with their team and both internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated initiative and ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgement, and effectively manage workload priorities in a leadership role within the vocational training sector.
• Understanding of Work Health and Safety principles and practices, and ability to comply with Institute WHS Policies and Procedures.
