Job summary

Peabody Energy seeks an experienced Underground Geologist for Centurion mine, 160 kilometres west of Mackay. You will deliver geological support to underground operations, ensuring accurate coal quality and structural interpretation, and aiding with safe extraction of coal resources.

You will contribute to geological modelling, grade control, resource optimisation and operational decision-making as production ramps up. A proactive, safety-focused professional is essential.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in Geology, Geoscience or related discipline.
  • Experience in underground coal mining is highly regarded.
  • Experience in geological modelling, mapping and interpretation.
  • Understanding of coal quality management and resource optimisation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide geological support to underground mining operations to optimise resource recovery and minimise risk.
  • Conduct geological mapping, face inspections and structural interpretation underground.
  • Monitor coal quality and provide timely recommendations to support production and processing.
  • Maintain and update geological models, plans and resource information.
  • Interpret borehole, exploration and production data to support mine planning.
  • Assist with geological forecasting and hazard identification.
  • Collaborate with Technical Services, Operations and Survey teams.

The Opportunity

Peabody is seeking an experienced Underground Geologist to join the team at our Centurion underground mine, located approximately 160 kilometres west of Mackay.

Reporting to the Technical Services Superintendent, you will be responsible for delivering geological support to underground operations, ensuring accurate coal quality and structural interpretation, and assisting with the safe and efficient extraction of coal resources. You will play a key role in geological modelling, grade control, resource optimisation and operational decision‑making as Centurion continues to ramp up production.

Your Impact
  • Provide geological support to underground mining operations to optimise resource recovery and minimise geological risk.
  • Conduct geological mapping, face inspections and structural interpretation underground.
  • Monitor coal quality and provide timely recommendations to support production and processing requirements.
  • Maintain and update geological models, plans and resource information.
  • Interpret borehole, exploration and production data to support mine planning activities.
  • Assist with geological forecasting and identification of potential mining hazards.
  • Collaborate closely with Technical Services, Operations and Survey teams to ensure geological information is communicated effectively.
  • Support compliance with statutory reporting and resource management requirements.
  • Investigate and report on geological anomalies, structures and seam variations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety, productivity and resource recovery.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, statutory and site requirements.
About You

You are a safety-focused professional with strong technical geological knowledge and a passion for supporting operational success in an underground mining environment.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Geology, Geoscience or a related discipline.
  • Experience in an underground coal mining environment highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience in geological modelling, mapping and interpretation.
  • Understanding of coal quality management and resource optimisation principles.
  • Strong commitment to safety and the ability to foster a positive safety culture.
  • Experience using geological software such as Vulcan, MinEx or similar systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder engagement capability.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Sound understanding of risk management and hazard identification.
  • A proactive, flexible and team-focused approach.
  • Current Queensland Coal Board Medical or ability to obtain one.
