Job summary

Swinburne University of Technology is seeking a hands‑on Technical Officer for Electrical & Electronics at Hawthorn campus. You will support electronics, instrumentation and control systems across teaching and research laboratories, manage the components store, and contribute to safety and procurement processes.

Working under the Laboratory Manager – Engineering Support, you will configure embedded platforms, perform testing, and maintain equipment to ensure high quality learning environments.

Qualifications

• Completion of an advanced diploma with relevant technical work experience, or a post‑trade certificate with extensive experience as a technician.
• Equivalent combination of relevant technical experience, education and training may also be considered.
• Hands-on capability across electronics, instrumentation and control systems, with experience using test equipment and embedded platforms.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical support across electronics, instrumentation and control systems used in teaching and research.
• Maintain and operate laboratory equipment, troubleshoot faults and undertake basic functional testing.
• Configure and fault‑find embedded platforms (e.g., Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi, ESP32).
• Undertake soldering and component identification, and use test and measurement equipment.
• Manage laboratory components, stock and inventory, including sourcing equipment and placing orders.
• Contribute to laboratory safety through SOPs and risk assessments.

About The Role

As the Technical Officer – Electrical & Electronics, you'll provide hands‑on technical support across electrical, electronics and instrumentation activities within the School of Engineering. Working alongside academics, researchers, students and technical specialists, you'll help ensure our laboratories, teaching spaces and facilities are safe, well‑equipped and ready to support innovative learning and research.

Under the broad direction of the Laboratory Manager – Engineering Support, you'll take ownership of the day‑to‑day operation of nominated laboratories and dedicated teaching spaces, including the Soldering Teaching Laboratory. You'll also manage the Components Store and play a key role in procurement, purchasing and inventory management.

This is a practical and varied technical role where you'll:

• Provide technical support across electronics, instrumentation and control systems used in teaching and research.
• Maintain and operate laboratory equipment, troubleshoot faults and undertake basic functional testing.
• Configure and fault‑find contemporary embedded and microcontroller platforms such as Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi and ESP32.
• Undertake through‑hole and surface‑mount soldering, electronic rework, wiring verification and component identification.
• Use electronic test and measurement equipment including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, signal generators and data acquisition systems.
• Manage laboratory components, stock and inventory, including sourcing equipment, obtaining quotations, placing orders and monitoring deliveries.
• Contribute to laboratory safety through the development, implementation and review of SOPs, Safe Work Instructions and Risk Assessments.
• Communicate technical and safety information clearly to students, academics, researchers and colleagues with varying levels of technical experience.
• Identify opportunities to improve laboratory safety, processes and systems and support the implementation of practical solutions.

About You

You'll bring relevant technical qualifications and experience, along with a practical, solutions‑focused approach. You'll have demonstrated capability across electronics, instrumentation and control systems, with hands‑on experience using test equipment, soldering and embedded platforms.

You'll also have strong organisational skills and experience managing inventory and purchasing activities, combined with a sound understanding of laboratory safety, hazardous materials and workplace health and safety requirements.

Most importantly, you'll be someone who enjoys working collaboratively, solving technical problems and helping others make the most of high‑quality teaching and research facilities.
