Responsibilities

• Set technical direction across the superannuation and retirement product portfolio while remaining directly accountable for hands-on contribution to design, coding and delivery.
• Contribute to software delivery by writing production code, shaping solution design, reviewing code and troubleshooting issues.
• Design, build and ship full-stack solutions across Vue, Rust, Node.js, GraphQL and PostgreSQL, owning features from concept to production.
• Translate customer, regulatory and business needs into pragmatic technical solutions with cross-functional teams.
• Lead technical design discussions and resolve engineering problems across product journeys in accumulation, insurance, retirement and income.
• Promote strong engineering practices: design, testing, observability, security and reliability.
• Explore AI-assisted engineering opportunities to improve productivity and delivery while maintaining standards.
• Mentor engineers through technical guidance and constructive feedback.
• Identify and manage technical debt and architectural risks to improve scalability.

Job description

The Full Stack Tech Lead is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on building and evolving our superannuation and retirement products. You will set technical direction while remaining deeply involved in the design, development and delivery of software, working alongside engineers to turn complex product needs into reliable, scalable customer experiences.

The product landscape spans accumulation, insurance, helping members save for a home, and pension, with innovative retirement solutions. Working closely with engineers, design, product and the wider Product Engineering function, you will guide technical decisions, solve complex problems and help shape how these products evolve across Vue, Rust, Node.js, GraphQL and PostgreSQL.

Role Responsibilities

• Set technical direction across the superannuation and retirement product portfolio while remaining directly accountable for meaningful hands-on contribution to product design, coding and delivery.
• Be a significant hands-on contributor to software delivery, writing production code, shaping solution design, reviewing code and troubleshooting complex production issues.
• Personally design, build and ship reliable full-stack solutions across Vue, Rust, Node.js, GraphQL and PostgreSQL, taking ownership of substantial product features from concept through to production.
• Partner closely with product, engineers and the wider Product Engineering function to translate complex customer, regulatory and business needs into pragmatic technical solutions, sharing context and aligning on approaches where products, platforms or dependencies intersect.
• Lead technical design discussions and resolve complex engineering problems across product journeys that span accumulation, contributions, insurance, retirement and income.
• Champion strong engineering practices across software design, automated testing, code quality, observability, security and operational reliability.
• Champion the effective use of AI-assisted engineering practices, identifying opportunities to improve developer productivity, quality and delivery throughput while maintaining appropriate engineering standards and controls.
• Mentor and support engineers through technical guidance, design feedback and constructive challenge without relying on formal people-management authority.
• Identify and manage technical debt, architectural risks and opportunities to improve the scalability and maintainability of the product suite.

Key skills and experience

Must-haves

• Proven experience as a hands-on technical lead or senior engineer, with significant personal contribution to designing, coding and shipping production software.
• Strong full-stack engineering capability across frontend, backend, APIs and data, with the judgement to make pragmatic technical decisions in complex product environments.
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical design and delivery, work through ambiguity and raise engineering quality without relying on formal people-management authority.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals, including maintainable design, automated testing, reliability, observability, security and production support.
• Strong collaboration and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively across product, engineering and the wider Product Engineering function.
• A strong advocate for AI-enabled software development, with the curiosity and judgement to help engineers adopt tools and practices that improve productivity, quality and delivery throughput.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with one or more of Vue, Rust, Node.js, GraphQL and PostgreSQL in production environments.
• Experience building customer-facing products within superannuation, retirement, wealth management or financial services.
