White Bay is partnering with a rapidly growing Australian software vendor delivering a sophisticated enterprise SaaS platform to major customers.

The business has grown considerably and is continuing to mature how customer-specific technical delivery is managed alongside the evolution of its core platform.

As part of this growth, they are looking for an experienced Technical Delivery Lead to take ownership of the development capability supporting customer delivery.

The Opportunity

• Internally titled Solution Technology Lead, this is a senior role sitting within the Delivery function and reporting to the Technical Manager.
• It combines technical leadership, solution architecture, people leadership, customer engagement and delivery ownership.
• You will lead a shared Java development capability supporting multiple concurrent customer projects. Working closely with Delivery Managers, you will help determine how engineering capacity is allocated, validate estimates and technical approaches, manage competing priorities, identify delivery risk and ensure commitments made to customers are technically achievable.
• You will also act as a senior technical representative in customer conversations, particularly where solution design, delivery commitments, platform considerations and commercial outcomes need to be balanced.
• This is not a traditional Engineering Manager position focused on internal product development, nor is it a coding-heavy Technical Lead role.
• You will need strong Java credibility and the ability to review code, challenge technical decisions and step into technical detail when required. However, the majority of your impact will come through leadership, judgement, prioritisation, solution oversight and customer delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the technical delivery capability supporting multiple concurrent customer projects.
• Work closely with Delivery Managers to prioritise engineering capacity across competing customer requirements.
• Review and challenge estimates, technical approaches, sequencing and delivery commitments before work is agreed.
• Translate customer requirements into practical technical designs that balance delivery speed, maintainability and long-term platform integrity.
• Take ownership of technical decisions where customer priorities, delivery constraints and platform considerations compete.
• Act as a senior technical adviser in customer discussions involving solution design, delivery risk, technical constraints and trade-offs.
• Identify technical or resourcing risks early and work with Delivery Managers to prevent avoidable overruns or missed milestones.
• Provide technical leadership to the Java development team, setting expectations around quality, accountability and engineering discipline.
• Mentor and develop engineers, helping the team become increasingly capable and self-sufficient.
• Review code and technical designs, providing appropriate quality gates without becoming the default developer for the team.
• Ensure customer-specific development remains aligned with platform architecture, security and engineering standards.
• Work closely with the Technical Manager and broader Delivery and Engineering functions to resolve complex technical and architectural issues.
• Support effective utilisation and planning of development resources across the customer portfolio.
• Take accountability for delivering technically sound solutions that also support successful customer and commercial outcomes.

About You

You will bring significant software development experience, with Java forming a substantial part of your technical background.

Importantly, you will also have moved beyond being primarily an individual contributor and developed experience leading technical delivery across customers, projects or implementation programs.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:

• Strong Java engineering knowledge and enough current technical depth to review code, designs and engineering decisions with credibility.
• Experience leading developers or technical teams delivering complex production software.
• Experience operating within a SaaS, platform or software vendor environment.
• Exposure to multiple concurrent customer projects rather than a single internal product roadmap.
• Experience managing or influencing shared engineering resources across competing priorities.
• Confidence assessing estimates, technical complexity, delivery risks and engineering commitments.
• Strong solution architecture capability, particularly across APIs, integrations and enterprise software environments.
• Experience working directly with external customers on technical solutions and delivery matters.
• Commercial awareness and an understanding that technical decisions can affect scope, timelines, utilisation and customer outcomes.
• Strong judgement when working through ambiguous problems where there may not be a perfect technical or commercial answer.
• The confidence to form a recommendation, explain the trade-offs and stand behind your position.
• Strong communication skills and the presence to represent the organisation credibly with senior customer stakeholders.
• A pragmatic approach to technology, balancing good engineering with what is achievable and valuable for the customer.
• Experience mentoring engineers and creating a culture of ownership and accountability.

This Role Will Suit Someone Who

• You may currently be a Technical Delivery Lead, Senior Technical Lead, Development Lead, Solution Architect with team leadership responsibilities, or an Engineering Lead working in a customer-facing software environment.
• You are likely to enjoy remaining close enough to the technology to understand how solutions work, challenge decisions and guide engineers, but you no longer need coding to occupy the majority of your week.
• You will be comfortable moving between a technical design discussion with developers, a prioritisation conversation with a Delivery Manager and a customer meeting where you need to explain why a particular commitment or technical approach needs to change.
• Most importantly, you will be comfortable making decisions.
• This role requires someone who can absorb technical, customer, resource and commercial considerations, work through the trade-offs and provide a clear recommendation rather than simply escalating difficult decisions elsewhere.
