Job summary

Port Stephens Council is seeking a hands-on Team Leader for the Salamander Bay Waste Transfer Station. You will guide a team of 7 Waste Operators, manage rostering, weighbridge operations, and coordinate waste collection and contractor tasks while upholding safety standards.

This permanent full-time role offers 38 hours per week with flexible work arrangements and overtime options.

Qualifications

• Certificate III in Waste Management or willingness and ability to obtain it.
• Experience in waste management or similar field.
• Proven ability to lead and motivate a team.
• Sound knowledge of weighbridge operations and MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Lead and support a team of 7 Waste Operators in waste acceptance and sorting, grounds maintenance and other duties.
• Oversee rostering and daily activities to ensure high standard operations.
• Deliver weighbridge operations and coordinate waste collection and contractor management when required.
• Maintain on-site safety and follow Council safety procedures and risk plans.

The opportunity

We’re looking for a Team Leader to provide hands‑on leadership and support to our team at the Salamander Bay Waste Transfer Station.

Our Waste Transfer Station sits within our Waste Operations unit, providing a service to the community of Port Stephens for the drop off and disposal of household waste (paint, gas bottles, oils, batteries, etc), e‑waste (electronics), and mixed waste. Working closely with our Strategic Waste unit, we aim to continuously maximise our landfill diversion and provide a positive customer experience.

Your role as Team Leader will see you coordinating your team of 7 Waste Operators in waste acceptance and sorting, grounds maintenance, and other operational duties to ensure the Transfer Station is presented and operating at a high standard for our community.

You will provide direction and leadership to the team throughout all daily activities (including staff rostering), and deliver weighbridge operations, coordinate waste collection and contractor management when required. Most importantly, you will ensure the ongoing safety on‑site and work within Council’s safety procedures and risk plans.

This is a permanent opportunity– working full‑time 38 hours / week + access to a flexible working arrangement

Optional overtime hours are available with Sunday shifts – penalty rates apply

Base Salary Range: $76,165 to $89,528 pa based on 38 hours / week + 12% superannuation + + $2,562 retention allowance + adverse work allowance
