Job summary

Rio Tinto is seeking a Superintendent Geoscience to lead the Brockman site Geoscience team near the Pilbara. You will mentor, coach and develop discipline leads, ensuring safe geology, hydrogeology and geotechnical activities align with mine objectives.

Reporting to the Mining Manager, you will integrate multiple disciplines, support critical operational decisions with quality information, and drive continuous improvement in planning, assurance and delivery.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to safety for yourself and the team.
  • Degree in geoscience, mining engineering, surveying or related discipline.
  • Experience in open-cut mining, mine geology, hydrogeology or geotechnical engineering.
  • Experience leading technical teams in a complex operational environment.
  • Ability to coordinate across functions and translate technical information into operational decisions.
  • Experience with technical assurance, risk management, reconciliation or mine planning interfaces.
  • Experience with Rio Tinto geoscience standards (helpful).
  • Knowledge of water management, drilling programs, orebody knowledge or slope management in Pilbara operations (helpful).

About The Role

We are looking for a Superintendent Geoscience to lead, mentor, coach and develop the site Geoscience team. Reporting to the Manager Mining, you will provide leadership for the safe execution of geology, hydrogeology and geotechnical engineering activities and help ensure team performance aligns with short to medium-term mine objectives. This is a great opportunity for a technical leader who enjoys developing people, integrating multiple disciplines and improving the quality of information used for operational decisions.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Lead a technical team and build a safe, inclusive and accountable working culture.
  • Set performance expectations, prioritise work and develop capability across geology, hydrogeology and geotechnical engineering.
  • Provide technical support and assurance from orebody knowledge through to mine execution.
  • Coordinate reconciliation and performance of geoscience models to support mine planning and operational delivery.
  • Drive conformance with site water management plans, including bore management, dewatering infrastructure and drill programs.
  • Lead first-line assurance for geology, hydrogeology and geotechnical engineering activities.
  • Monitor and escape technical and operational risks through relevant governance forums.
  • Partner with operational planning, mine control, technical teams and projects to improve delivery and reduce variability.

Where you’ll be working

We are extending the life of our Brockman hub by developing the Brockman Syncline 1 mine project. Brockman Syncline will have the capacity to process up to 34 million tonnes per annum of iron ore, leveraging our existing plants. Construction has started, with first ore expected in 2027.

There are three villages that are part of the operations Brockman 4, West Pilbara and Nammuldi Village. With a fly-in fly-out workforce of around 850, our team commutes from Perth, Geraldton, Albany and Busselton.
