Job summary

Rio Tinto is seeking a Superintendent Environment to lead a team of Environment Specialists and Site Environmental Advisors to deliver environmental compliance, risk management and performance outcomes across supported assets.

You will provide technical leadership, balance priorities across assets and act as the primary environmental interface for asset leadership teams, driving continuous improvement and ensuring governance and assurance.

Qualifications

  • Strong leadership experience in environmental, technical or operational teams in a complex industrial environment.
  • Experience implementing environmental management systems and driving continuous improvement.
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance, risk management, governance and assurance processes.
  • Ability to prioritise work, manage resources and deliver multi-workstream outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of Environment Specialists and Site Environmental Advisors, fostering safety, technical excellence and high performance.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for environmental delivery, strengthening capability and quality.
  • Balance environmental priorities across assets to optimise risk management and outcomes.
  • Coach and develop the team to strengthen environmental risk, compliance and governance expertise.
  • Drive environmental compliance, risk management and performance across assets through planning and resource management.
  • Act as the primary environmental interface for asset leadership teams, supporting operational decision-making.
  • Oversee environmental approvals, licences, compliance requirements and EMS.
  • Lead incident response, investigations and corrective actions to improve performance.
  • Coordinate assurance activities including audits and inspections to translate findings into outcomes.
  • Build partnerships with regulators, communities and internal stakeholders to deliver integrated environmental outcomes.

About The Role

We are looking for a Superintendent Environment to lead a team of Environment Specialists and Site Environmental Advisors to deliver environmental compliance, risk management and performance outcomes across supported assets

What You'll Be Doing
  • Lead and develop a team of Environment Specialists and Site Environmental Advisors, fostering a strong safety culture, technical excellence and high performance
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for Environment Specialists and Site Environmental Advisors, strengthening capability, consistency and quality of environmental delivery
  • Balance environmental priorities and allocate resources across multiple supported assets to optimise risk management and delivery outcomes
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and capability development to strengthen environmental risk, compliance and governance expertise across the team
  • Drive environmental compliance, risk management and performance outcomes across supported assets through effective planning, prioritisation and resource management
  • Act as the primary environmental interface for asset leadership teams, supporting operational decision-making and delivery of environmental obligations
  • Provide technical oversight of environmental approvals, commitments, licences, compliance requirements and environmental management systems
  • Lead environmental incident response, investigations, corrective actions and learnings to improve environmental performance and prevent recurrence
  • Coordinate environmental assurance activities including audits, inspections, critical control verification and action management, ensuring findings are translated into measurable outcomes
  • Build effective partnerships with technical, operational, regulatory and external stakeholders to manage complex environmental issues and improve environmental performance

  • Strong knowledge of environmental compliance, environmental risk management, governance and assurance processes
  • Extensive experience implementing environmental management systems and driving continuous improvement initiatives
  • Proven ability to prioritise work, manage resources and deliver outcomes across multiple workstreams and stakeholders
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, influencing and communication skills, with the ability to support operational decision-making and manage complex environmental issues
Helpful for Success
  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • Extensive experience managing environmental approvals, licences, obligations and regulatory requirements within mining, resources or other heavy industry sectors
  • Experience working with environmental assurance frameworks, audits, inspections and critical control verification processes
  • Experience engaging with regulators, Traditional Owners, communities and other external stakeholders to deliver integrated environmental outcomes
  • Demonstrated success leading organisational change, capability development and performance improvement initiatives
