Job summary

GTS Freight Management Pty Ltd is seeking an experienced State Operations Manager to lead our Melbourne operations, fleet and transport activities. The role may be based in Adelaide or Mildura, but the primary focus is the Melbourne operation and ensuring safe, efficient transport performance.

You will report to the national operations leadership, drive KPI outcomes, manage drivers, subcontractors and workshop coordination, and foster a practical, customer-focused culture across the network.

Qualifications

• At least two years’ experience in a similar transport, logistics or operational leadership role
• Strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated commitment to customer satisfaction
• Sound attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities
• Confidence to resolve operational issues and workplace conflict constructively
• Strong teamwork and relationship-management skills
• Experience in people management and safety legislation is highly regarded

Responsibilities

• Monitor operational performance and report against KPIs
• Identify opportunities to improve costs, systems, processes and work practices
• Manage the commercial performance of the operation and support profitable growth
• Ensure transport activities comply with safety and regulatory requirements
• Lead, coach and develop employees
• Coordinate working hours, rest breaks and leave
• Maintain professional customer communication and address service enquiries
• Coordinate preventative maintenance, servicing and repairs with workshop personnel
• Support load building and other operational functions as required
• Promote a positive, practical and solutions-focused culture

Job description

GTS is seeking an experienced State Operations Manager to lead our Melbourne operations.

While this position may be based in either Adelaide or Mildura, its primary responsibility is the management of the Melbourne operation, fleet and transport activities.

Reporting to the Assistant National Operations Manager and National Operations Manager, you will drive operational performance, fleet utilisation, freight optimisation, customer service and commercial outcomes. You will also manage employees, subcontractors and third-party logistics providers while maintaining strong safety and Chain of Responsibility compliance.

Key responsibilities

In this role, you will:

• Lead the day-to-day running of our Melbourne operations
• Coordinate driver scheduling, work diaries, safe driving plans and delivery requirements
• Manage operational staff, drivers & subcontractors
• Monitor operational performance and report against agreed KPIs
• Identify opportunities to improve costs, systems, processes and work practices
• Manage the commercial performance of the operation and support profitable growth
• Ensure transport activities comply with Chain of Responsibility, fatigue-management, work health and safety, and other legislative requirements
• Lead, coach and develop employees
• Coordinate working hours, rest breaks and leave
• Maintain professional customer communication and address service enquiries
• Work with relevant workshop personnel to coordinate preventative maintenance, servicing and repairs
• Support load building, pallet control and other operational functions when required
• Promote a positive, practical and solutions-focused culture

About you

You are a capable transport operations leader who can manage people, operational outcomes and compliance across a busy, changing environment. You communicate clearly, make sound commercial decisions and remain focused on safety, service and operational efficiency.

To be successful, you will have:

• At least two years’ experience in a similar transport, logistics or operational leadership role
• Strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills
• A demonstrated commitment to customer satisfaction
• Sound attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities
• The confidence to resolve operational issues and workplace conflict constructively
• Strong teamwork and relationship-management skills

Experience in people management, human resources processes and work health and safety legislation will be highly regarded. Sound computer skills and strong written communication are also desirable.

This role is responsible for managing GTS’s Melbourne operations.

The successful candidate may be based at either:

• Burton, South Australia; or

Regardless of the successful candidate’s base location, their operational focus and management responsibility will be Melbourne.
