Job summary

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (EC Technology) seeks a Staff Software Engineer to engineer platforms that detect and investigate financial crime. You will work hands-on across services, APIs, data integration and interfaces used by detection teams.

You will help modernise shared platforms, embed AI capabilities, and drive reliability and security across critical investigation workflows. You’ll influence design decisions and mentor peers while delivering production code.

Qualifications

• Strong computer science foundations and ability to work across technologies as problems evolve.
• Experience across backend services, APIs and data integration with modern tech stacks.
• Comfort designing and building services using a modern typed language (Java, Kotlin, Go or Python).
• Full-stack capability with React and TypeScript, or similar frontend/backend-for-frontend setup.
• Understanding of cloud-native delivery, containers, automated pipelines and production observability.
• Willingness to reuse proven capabilities and reduce duplication across platforms.
• Experience with security, privacy, reliability and regulatory controls in design delivery.
• Eagerness to learn new languages, frameworks and tools as needed.
• Collaborative mindset with mentoring and code-review experience.
• Exposure to AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, GitHub Actions, Argo CD, Kafka, Grafana or Prometheus is advantageous.
• Experience building or operating AI-enabled systems including model integration and guardrails.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and operate production services and APIs with clear contracts and boundaries.
• Contribute to architecture decisions including refactoring, modularisation and performance improvements.
• Consolidate capabilities onto shared platforms and retirement of legacy tech as core work.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and progressive delivery practices.
• Establish reliability and observability via dashboards, alerts, SLAs and ownership.
• Engineer secure and dependable AI features, including orchestration and guardrails.
• Embed security, privacy, reliability and regulatory controls into design and delivery.
• Raise engineering standards through thoughtful code reviews and strong reasoning.
• Collaborate across teams, mentor others and share design decisions.
• Familiarity with AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, GitHub Actions, Argo CD, React, TypeScript, Kafka, Grafana/Prometheus is helpful.
