Commonwealth Bank in Melbourne is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help engineer production services, APIs, data integrations and interfaces used across fraud detection and financial crime investigations. You’ll ship production code, influence design, modernise platforms, embed AI capabilities and build reliable, secure, observable systems while mentoring teammates.

Qualifications

• Strong computer science foundations and ability to work across technologies as problems evolve.
• Experience with backend services, APIs and data integration; willingness to contribute to user interfaces when needed.
• Proficiency in modern typed languages such as Java, Kotlin, Go or Python.
• Full‑stack capability with React and TypeScript; backend‑for‑frontend layers.
• Understanding of cloud-native delivery, containers, automated pipelines and production observability.
• Commitment to reusing proven capabilities, reducing duplication and simplifying tech stacks.
• Ability to build security, privacy, reliability and risk controls from the outset.
• Willingness to learn new languages, frameworks and tools as required.
• Collaborative mindset with mentoring, code reviews and thoughtful design decisions.
• Familiarity with AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, GitHub Actions, Argo CD, React, TypeScript, Kafka, Grafana or Prometheus is a plus.
• Experience building or operating AI-enabled systems, including model integration and guardrails.

Responsabilités

• Design, build and operate production services and APIs with clear contracts and integration boundaries.
• Contribute to architecture and design decisions, including refactoring and modularisation for performance.
• Consolidate capabilities onto shared platforms and retire legacy tech as core engineering work.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and progressive delivery practices.
• Establish reliability and observability with dashboards, alerts, and service-level objectives.
• Engineer secure and dependable AI features, including orchestration, evaluation and guardrails.
• Embed security, privacy, reliability and regulatory controls into design and delivery.
• Raise engineering standards through code reviews, pairing and clear technical reasoning.
